Bade Hanuman Ji Temple, Allahabad
The lying idol of Hanumanji is worshiped here.
This temple is situated on the banks of Sangam in Allahabad, known as Kotwal of Prayag. The temple is special because here the idol of Hanuman ji is in a lying position and according to the belief, the virtue of Sangam is considered complete only when this temple is visited.
According to the ancient story, after conquering Lanka, Maryada Purushottam Ram came to this place to seek blessings from sage Bhardwaj and Hanuman suffered physical pain. He fell into an unconscious state. Janaki gave him new life with vermilion. This is the reason why the idol of Hanuman here is in a lying position and vermilion is offered to him.
This statue is 20 feet tall. It is said that about six hundred years ago, Aurangzeb had tried to remove this statue from the place of the temple. The statue did not move even after several days of efforts by the Mughal soldiers. Since then this statue is decorated with all the jewellery. A mace is also kept next to the idol. Here Hanuman ji also wears sacred thread.
