Bhuiforwanath Shiv Temple Lakhimpur
The ancient Bhuiforwanath Shiva temple located in the city is a center of deep faith for the people of Terai region. There is no mention of how old this Shivalinga is. Regarding the appearance of Shivalinga, it is believed that this Shivalinga had appeared from inside the ground, that is why it was named Bhuiforvanath. The temple was built hundreds of years ago by the then rulers of Maheva State. Later it was renovated from time to time.
There used to be dense forests in Lakhimpur of Naimish area. Later many states were established in the district. The forest of Lakhimpur came under the jurisdiction of Mahewa State. When the then rulers of Maheva State started cutting this forest, a divine Shivalinga appeared at this place. The people of Maheva State decided to uproot this Shivalinga and install it in the state capital Mahevagarhi. Despite many efforts, they could not dig out the Shivalinga. On the contrary, the Shivalinga kept growing. Tired and defeated, Shivlinga was left to remain at the same place. Later a grand temple was built at this place. The recognition of this place is far and wide. It is said that this Shivalinga is in the form of a pillar.
Bhuiforvanath temple is built on a huge platform about 10 feet high. The entrance is on the east side. Apart from the divine stone Shivalinga, statues of Parvati, Ganesha and Nandi are installed in the sanctum sanctorum and the shikhara is dome shaped. There is also a temple of Radha-Krishna and Hanuman ji in the temple complex. The two banyan trees at the entrance of the temple joined together to form a natural entrance. Both these trees fell together on the last Monday of Sawan last year. Branches from the same trees have been planted in their place. The temples are grand and huge and provide peace to the people who come here. Although there is a constant flow of devotees in the ancient Bhuiforvanath temple throughout the year, there is a huge crowd of devotees here throughout the month of Sawan. On Monday of Sawan, there is a whole day fair here. Kanwariyas come from far away places and perform Jalabhishek of Lord Bholenath with the water of holy rivers. Even on Shivratri, many religious events including Rudra Mahayagya are organized in the temple. Devotees organize Bhandara every Monday of Sawan.
