It is said that centuries ago, Goddess Durga had appeared to a devotee named Kamalnath. According to another legend, this idol sits on the demon Raktabeej. Goddess Durga fought a fierce battle with Raktabeej. Raktabeej was a demon who was blessed with many extraordinary boons. If a drop of Raktabeej’s blood fell on the ground, it would create another Raktabeej of equal strength. The result of which was that millions of bloodthirsty demons were born in the world. To end Raktabeej, the goddess came up with a solution and decided not to let his blood fall on the earth. The goddess burnt the demon Raktabija with burning spices and collected his blood in a bowl and drank it.

The goddess took as many forms as the Raktabeej were born. By doing this Goddess Durga destroyed Raktabeej and hence she came to be known as Bijasan Devi.
