Kaliyuga ruled this earth by tricking King Parikshit:
According to the Purana, Kaliyuga started after Lord Krishna returned from Dwarka to Vaikuntha. Kaliyuga came to earth in the form of a human and created a leela and deceived King Parikshit, a descendant of the Pandavas. The king, bound by religion, despite knowing everything, gave shelter to Kaliyuga and within some time, Kaliyuga showed its true colors….
This is how Kaliyuga came on earth:
After Shri Krishna left the earth (Dwarka) and returned to Vaikuntha, the Pandavas also went to heaven via the Himalayas. Earlier, the Pandavas had handed over their kingdom to Parikshit, son of Abhimanyu and Uttara. One day King Parikshit was going hunting when on the way he saw a man beating a bull and a cow with a stick in his hand. That bull had one leg and the cow looked like Kamdhenu. The king stopped his chariot and got angry and asked the man – “Who are you, the unrighteous one, who is torturing innocent cows and bulls?” Your actions are such that you deserve death penalty.”
Hearing the words of King Parikshit, Kaliyuga in human form started trembling with fear. On this the king asked the bull – “O God! Where are your three legs? Are you a bull or a god?” The bull said everything despite not saying anything and after hearing the words of the bull, the king took out his sword to kill Kaliyuga. On this, Kaliyuga fell at the feet of King Parikshit saying ‘Trahi-Trahi’. The king did not kill the person who came under his protection. So he donated his life to Kaliyuga.
The king ordered Kaliyuga:
King Parikshit was also very knowledgeable. With just a few words he recognized ‘Dharma’ in the form of a bull and ‘Mother Earth’ in the form of a cow. After giving his life to Kaliyuga, King Parikshit said – “Kaliyuga! You are the cause of sin, lies, theft, fraud and poverty. When you came to me for refuge, I gave you my life. Now go away from the boundaries of my kingdom and Don’t ever come back.” On this, Kaliyuga started pleading – “Maharaj! Your kingdom is on the entire earth. I have come to seek refuge in you, so please give me a place to stay.”
The king gave these five places:
Accepting the request of Kaliyuga, King Parikshit gave him four places to live like gambling, alcohol, adultery and violence. On this, Kaliyuga requested – “King! These four places are not enough for me; please give me one more place.” On this the king also gave him permission to stay in ‘Swarna’ and proceeded for hunting. While giving place to Kaliyuga, the king forgot that he was wearing a gold crown on his head.
Kaliyuga showed its effect:
As soon as he got the place from the king, Kaliyuga left from there; But after some time he came back in subtle form and sat in the king’s crown. When the king felt thirsty on his way to hunt, he went to the ashram of ‘Shamik Rishi’. At that time, Rishi Shamik was absorbed in meditation and even when the king asked for water, he did not answer. On this, Kaliyuga sitting in the king’s crown showed its effect and the thought of giving death penalty to the sage came to the king’s mind. But due to good values he restrained himself from doing so. But due to the evil influence of Kaliyuga, his mind became corrupt and he put a dead snake around the neck of Rishi Shamik. This was the first impact of Kaliyuga on any human being on earth and it made the most cultured king its victim. When Shamik Rishi’s son ‘Shrungi’ returned after taking bath, he saw that his father was sitting in trance and a dead snake was lying around his neck. Seeing this he became very angry and on finding out he came to know that a king had committed this act. On this he cursed that within the next seven days the king would die due to the bite of Takshak snake.
The king himself fulfilled his promise:
When Shamik Rishi completed his meditation and came to know about this, he sent information to the king. So that he remains fully alert. On this the king fully prepared himself for death and after coronation of his son ‘Janmejaya’, he handed over the kingdom to him. Then on the seventh day the king died due to the bite of Takshak.
When Janmejay came to know the reason for his father’s death, he became angry and performed ‘Sarpasatra-Yagya’ to kill all the snakes. On this all the snakes came and started falling into the Havan Kund. Frightened ‘Takshak’ wrapped himself in the throne of Indra and on the persuasion of ‘Aastik Rishi’, Janmejaya stopped his yagya. Then there was no king left on earth capable enough to stop Kaliyuga.
