Raj RanChhor Temple, Jodhpur, Rajasthan

Share

The queen used to visit this Krishna temple from the ramparts of Mehrangarh.

The temple of Rajaranchodji is also included among the major Krishna temples of Suryanagari i.e. Jodhpur. This temple is located near the world famous Mehrangarh Fort and was built by Rani Rajkanwar about 110 years ago.

Jhadechi ji alias Rani Rajkanwar was the daughter of Raja Veebha of Jamnagar and her marriage ceremony took place with Prince Maharaja Jaswant Singh of Jodhpur. The queen came to Mehrangarh fort at the age of thirteen and since then never came out of the fort. After the death of Maharaja Jaswant Singh, he spent more than one lakh rupees and built a temple of his beloved deity Krishna, which became famous as the temple of Rajaranchodji.

The most important thing was that she never went to the temple for worship throughout her life. The ground in front of Jodhpur railway station was made thirty feet higher, so that the queen could have darshan of Krishna from the ramparts of Mehrangarh. The priest of the temple used to stand outside the door of the temple carrying the flame of the evening aarti. The queen used to see the same flame from the ramparts of the fort.

According to the information engraved on the stone, this temple was opened for the devotees on June 12, 1905 in the presence of Maharaja Sardar Singh, son of Rani Rajkanwar. There is also an inn here, which is now known as Jaswant Sarai.

The main entrance of Rajaranchod Temple is quite grand and artistic. The carvings of vines and beautiful flowers and leaves on two large decorated pillars made of red stone and the attraction of the arch connecting the two pillars at the top fascinates everyone. There are artistic chhatris at both ends of the front part of the temple. After climbing about thirty steps from the main entrance, there is a huge archway. There are twelve trees in the open space on both sides of the stairs. The statue of Lord Ranchod carved out of black stone is installed in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.

Darshan timings in the temple:

The temple remains open from 6.30 am to 12 noon. After this it opens at 5 pm and darshan can be done till 9 pm. Swings are organized here during Janmashtami, Annakoot and Shravan months. In the month of Shravan, Thakurji is ensconced in a huge swing made of silver and kept for worship.
