This lowland region of the Himalayas has been a major center of worship of Shiva and Shakti. This is the reason why there are many mythological Shiva temples in Kheri district and there are also many ancient temples of Adishakti.
There is an ancient temple of Shitala Devi near Gurudwara Guru Singh Sabha in the middle of the city. The ancient idol of the goddess installed in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple is worshiped in the form of Maa Mahagauri.
There is no authentic mention of when and who established this statue, but it is a popular belief that during the Mahabharata period, Lord Shri Krishna had installed the stone statue of Goddess Mahagauri in the form of Shitala Devi along with Sankata Devi. It is also a popular belief that among the seven goddesses who were born in the form of a girl to King Ven during the Mahabharata period, Shitala Devi, a girl in the form of Maa Mahagauri, was established here.
There used to be forests all around here
It is said that at the time when Shitala Devi was established here, there used to be a dense forest here. Hundreds of years ago, when the forest was cut and the population started settling here, this divine statue appeared. Gradually this Devi place became the main center of Tantra Sadhana.Even today, apart from the common people, Tantra devotees gather here during the Gupt Navratri held twice a year, apart from Sharadiya and Vasantik Navratri. People worship and perform rituals of Maa Shitala Devi to protect herself from various diseases and epidemics like smallpox, measles etc.
Devotees believe that worshiping Mother Shitala Devi increases happiness and prosperity. The body remains healthy and fit.
Earlier it was in the form of Mathiya.
Now there is no mention of the exact date of construction of the grand temple, but according to popular belief, it was in the form of a small monastery in the beginning of the nineteenth century (1803 AD). At present there is a grand temple here. The temple is built of Lakhauri bricks. There is a verandah in front of the temple and a circumambulation path all around it. The height of the sanctum sanctorum of the temple is approximately 35 feet. Dasvidya statues have been installed in the Pradakshina path.
