There is a tradition of worshiping nine forms of Durga for nine days during Navratri. Mother Shailputri is worshiped on the first day of Navratri. The first and ancient temple of Shailputri in India is located at Marhiya Ghat in Varanasi. In this temple, on the first day of Navratri, a flood of devotees gather in the court of Mata. Devotees carrying red chunari, red flowers and prasad stand in queue and wait for their turn to have darshan of the Goddess. Women make a vow to the mother goddess to protect her husband. There is a mythological story regarding the establishment of this temple. Shailputri is the daughter of mountain king Himalaya and the better half of Lord Shiva.
Once Shailputri became angry with Mahadev and left Mount Kailash and came to Kashi. Kashi fascinated him. When Mahadev came to persuade her, Shailputri refused to go with him and expressed her desire to settle in Kashi. Bhole agreed to his request. Since then he is sitting here in Kashi. Here the idol of Mata has a trident in her right hand and a flower in her left hand. The vehicle of Shailputri Mata is Taurus.
