By donating Shaligram Shila, a person gets the same result as he gets by donating the earth up to seven seas. Therefore, in the month of Kartik, one must take bath and donate Shaligram stone with devotion.

Shaligram

Shaligram is a black colored smooth, oval stone found in the bed of Gandaki river in Nepal. He is said to be a form of Lord Vishnu. Due to the curse of Tulsi, Lord Vishnu had to become Shaligram. In Hindu religion, there is a tradition of Tulsi-Shaligram marriage on the day of Dev Prabodhani Ekadashi or Devuthani Ekadashi.

1👉Being self-existent, there is no need for consecration of Shaligram and devotees can worship it directly at home or temple.

2👉Shaligrams are found in different forms, some are simply oval and some have a hole, these have conch, chakra, mace or padma carved inside the stone.

3👉The worship of Lord Shaligram is not complete without Tulsi and when Tulsi is offered, he becomes immediately happy.

4👉By marrying Shri Shaligram and Bhagwati Swarupa Tulsi, all privations, discord, sins, sorrows and diseases go away.

5👉By getting Tulsi Shaligram married, one gets the same virtuous results as by doing Kanyadaan.

8👉Lord Shiva has also praised Lord Shaligram in the Kartik Mahatmaya of Skandapuran. It is mentioned in the Prakritikhand chapter of Brahmavaivartapurana that where Lord Shaligram is worshipped, Goddess Lakshmi also resides along with Lord Vishnu.

9👉It is also written in the Puranas that one who sprinkles the water of Shaligram Shila on himself gets the same results as bathing in all the yagyas and all the pilgrimages.

10👉One who continuously anoints the Shaligram stone with water, becomes entitled to the virtue of complete charity and the best results of circumambulating the earth.

11👉One who drinks the nectar of his feet at the time of death becomes free from all sins and goes to Vishnuloka.

12👉In the house where Shaligram is worshiped daily, Vaastu defects and obstacles automatically get eliminated.

Lord Vishnu is worshiped in the form of black stone in many places. Not only this, during the worship of Satya Narayan, Pandit ji keeps a black stone with him which is kept near the idol of Vishnu ji and then the worship is started. This stone is known as Shaligram. This curse was so powerful that it turned Lord Vishnu into stone. He had to accept this because it was given to him by his dearest devotee Vrinda. This Shaligram stone is found only near the banks of river Gandak.

It is usually available in black or red color and is kept in a box. Whoever keeps this Shaligram stone in his house has to take great care of worship and cleanliness. This is a story of ego, devotion, love and betrayal, in which God betrayed the devotee and due to which he was cursed. Let us know its complete story. Jalandhar: A Part of Shiva Once upon a time there was a mighty demon named Jalandhar. Which was born from the third eye of Shiva. This was the reason why he was a very powerful warrior. He was married to a girl named Vrinda. Vrinda was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. Due to its Pativrata religion, Jalandhar had become invincible. Battle of Jalandhar and Shiva: He also defeated Lord Shiva in a battle. He became proud of his invincibility and started troubling the gods of heaven. Feeling sad, all the gods took refuge in Lord Vishnu and started praying to end the terror of Jalandhar.

Because Jalandhar can be defeated only when the purity of wife Vrinda is destroyed. Vrinda: The greatest devotee of Vishnu. Despite being the daughter and wife of a demon, she was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. She was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu and had complete faith in him. Betrayal of Vishnu: All the gods saw that even Shiva could not defeat him, so they sought refuge in Vishnu. Lord Vishnu by his illusion took the form of Jalandhar and by deceit destroyed Vrinda’s religion of Pativrata. Due to this, Jalandhar’s power weakened and he was killed in the war.

Curse of Vrinda: When Vrinda touched Lord Vishnu, he came to know that he was not Jalandhar. And he asked who he was. When Vrinda came to know of Lord Vishnu’s deceit, she cursed Lord Vishnu to turn into stone. Lord Vishnu was ashamed of Vrinda’s betrayal, so to keep Vrinda’s curse alive, he manifested himself in the form of a stone which was called Shaligram.

Tulsi Lord Vishnu told Vrinda that you will appear as Tulsi in the next life and will be more dear to me than Lakshmi. Your place will be on my head. I will not eat without you. This is the reason why Tulsi is definitely kept in the Prasad of Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu does not accept Prasad offered without Tulsi. Marriage of Shaligram Tulsi: Tulsi plant emerged from the ashes of Vrinda.

To maintain the dignity and purity of Vrinda, the gods got the Shaligram form of Lord Vishnu married to Tulsi. To remember this incident, every year Tulsi is married to Shaligram on the day of Kartik Shukla Ekadashi i.e. Dev Prabodhani Ekadashi.
