In the Aditya period, in the Ikshvaku dynasty, King Kalmashpada hit Shakti, the son of sage Vashishtha, with a whip for asking him to leave the path, as a result the king was cursed to become a cannibal. After that, Shakti and his other brothers were devoured by demons and the sin-obsessed king was having terrible nightmares.
In his nightmares, he used to see bad dreams like the ocean, the earth, mountain peaks, being tied to gold, iron and silver by red maidens, being scratched by birds and being eaten by shrigals. He is becoming disturbed and orphaned due to nightmares like drowning in a waterless river, being torn by the teeth of a donkey, being attacked in the eyes by the Vetalagans and being pierced by innumerable arrows. Knowing all this situation, the king’s ministers and others consoled the king and advised him to worship the ancestors, gods and Brahmins.
Then the king talked about eating the 99 sons of Sage Vasistha and decided to immerse himself in the fire alive. When the king along with everyone reached Vasisthaji’s ashram to ask the solution to get rid of Brahmahatya, his daughter Vishwaanti said – This terrible demon has come to eat us.
Maharishi Vashishtha said – This is not a demon, he is King Kalmashapada. Maharishi, after getting rid of the roar, made the king free from the demonic spirit with the water of Mantraput and asked him to go to Kushasthali (Avantika) and become free from fear after seeing the Linga that destroys nightmares near Mahakaal. The king came here and saw the Linga, his nightmares changed into good dreams. The king again started ruling Ayodhya, since then this Linga is famous by the name of Suswapneshwar.
The person who sees this Linga is always worshiped in this world and his desires are fulfilled. Actually, only by having darshan one attains the path of virtuous yogis.
