There are many ancient temples of historical and religious importance on the banks of Mother Narmada, in which the Vyas Narayan Temple on the banks of Narmada located in the fort of the city has its own importance. According to beliefs, Lord Shiva himself is established here in the form of Shivalinga. It is said that near the temple here, Maharishi Ved Vyas had performed severe penance for many years to please Lord Shiva, after which Lord Shiva appeared before him and asked for a boon, and Maharishi Ved Vyas in the spirit of public welfare. He prayed to Lord Shiva to establish himself here in the form of Shivalinga forever. Pleased with the penance of Maharishi Ved Vyas, Lord Shiva got established here forever in the form of Shivalinga. Since Lord Shiva was established here forever in the form of Shivalinga on the prayer of Maharishi Ved Vyas, hence this Shivalinga is worshiped in the name of Vyas Narayan.
Shiva devotee told that on normal days, people come here from far and wide to have darshan of Lord Shiva, since this Shiva temple is also mentioned in Shiv Purana etc., hence there is always a gathering of devotees here. In the month of Shravan, devotees reach here from early morning for darshan of Lord Shiva and for worship and consecration. Even on Monday of the month of Shravan, such a crowd of devotees gather here that they do not even get a place to set their feet. Shiva devotee told that according to religious beliefs, the person who has Kaal Sarp Dosh in his life. This defect gets eliminated by worshiping and worshiping in this Ved Vyas Narayan temple.
There is also a belief related to the Ved Vyas Temple that the Maa Narmada which is currently flowing from the south direction of the temple, earlier used to flow from the north direction. It is said that once Maharishi Ved Vyas invited the gods for food, so the gods told Ved Vyas Muni that they cannot sit and eat food in the south of Narmada, due to which on the prayer of Ved Vyas Muni, Mother Narmada started flowing from north to south direction, after which the gods accepted food from Ved Vyas Muni.
