Sampau Mahadev Temple Dholpur Rajasthan
Saipau Mahadev Temple, Dholpur, Rajasthan
Situated in Saipau subdivision of Dholpur, this Mahadev temple was built about 200 years ago by the Jat ruler of Dholpur, Maharaj Rana Bhagwant Singh.
The history of the construction of the temple is very interesting and exciting. It is said that in 1305, a Brahmin brother and sister who were on a pilgrimage to Varanasi had a dream about the location of this temple. Then both those brothers and sisters reached here. There was a huge mound here. When they excavated, a Shivalinga was found here. But Shivlinga was very huge. No matter how much digging he got the laborers to do, within a short time it would be filled with soil again. Therefore, Shivalinga started being worshiped here itself in its original state.
Then Dholpur’s king Maharaj Kirat Singh Rana (1803-35) started excavation here so that this Shivalinga could be taken to the temple. But even after digging for a long time, the bottom of Shivalinga was not found. So he got a platform and a raised square built all around for worship here itself. After his death, his son Maharaj Bhagwant Singh Rana (1836-73) ascended the throne and under the supervision of his brother-in-law Rajbhar, he built a grand and beautiful temple, an unmatched example of construction art. Remains of very ancient sculptures are kept in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. Maharaj constructed the temple and handed it over to the same Brahmin family. At present Mahant ji is the Mahant of the 18th generation.
Tourists and devotees are drawn towards this temple from far and wide. It is said that every wish of the devotees is fulfilled here.
This temple is also called Ram Rameshwar Mahadev Temple because Lord Shri Ram ji had come to this place with his Guru Vishwamitra ji and here he had performed penance for Lord Shiva.
Every year a huge fair is organized here on the fourteenth day of Phalgun and Shravan months. In which a large number of devotees come to see Mahadev.
