Pedhya Maruti Temple

Share

Pedhya Maruti Temple is an ancient Hanuman temple in Thane-Mumbai. The temple has been renovated now after it was establishment in the year 1936.

It is believed that the four feet idol of Lord Hanuman is more than 425 years old and is self-manifested (Swayambhu Hanuman). The temple is situated on a private land and is now re-constructed few years back.

According to the priest, the idol of Lord Hanuman is very unique as it reflects one of the incidents wherein Lord Hanuman had tried to swallow the Sun.

Before Independence, the area around the temple was known as Ramdaswadi as Mahant Damodardas Ramdas owned the temple. In 1917 a proposal to construct a temple around the idol was proposed and a loan was arranged for the temple construction.Work went on for nearly 20 years and was finally completed in 1936.

The temple is popularly known as Pedhya Maruti Mandir and it has a lovely legend behind it.During that time traders and Govind Kulkarni who worked as a clerk with Mahant Damodardas had wished that after the completion of the construction of the temple they would offer pedhas to Lord hanuman. Since then the temple is known as Pedhya Maruti Mandir.

There is a huge rush of devotees during the month of shravan and more than ten thousand devotees visit the temple during Hanuman Jayanti as grand celebrations are carried out at this temple. A palki procession is carried out around the market area.

This tradition has been followed since the past 85 years and still continues with the same enthusiasm. “Lord Hanuman is the only one who is a devotee as well as a God,” says the priest.
