Harihareshwar Temple – Raigad

Share

Harihareshwar Temple is a Hindu temple located at Harihareshwar town in the Raigad district of Maharashtra. The temple complex comprises two adjacent temples. One of them is a small Kalbhairav temple that needs to be visited first and the other is the main Harihareshwar temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed that Lord Shiva created Kalbhairava and blessed him with all mantras.

The holy river Savitri that originates at Mahableshwar merges with the Arabian Sea at Harihareshwar which makes that temple even more religiously significant.Harihareshwar is often referred to as Dev-ghar, or ‘House of God’, because the temple sits to the north and is said to have been blessed by Lord Vishnu.Inside the ancient temple, there is ‘linga.’ In the medieval period, Peshwas contributed towards the construction of the temple.

Situated atop the Harihareshwar Hill, the architecture of the temple is unique and attractive. Inside the main sanctum of the temple, there are idols of Lord Shiva, Parvati, Vishnu, and Brahma.A pradakshina path goes around the temple, along the seashore. There is also a huge boulder divided into two segments just behind the temple. It is believed that Bhima, one of the Pandava brothers, broke a huge boulder into two separate pieces since it stood in the way to the temple.

HISTORY OF THE TEMPLE
Believed to be built in late medieval period, the main deity of the temple was the ‘kuladaivat’ of the Peshwas, the prime ministers of the great Maratha Empire. ‘Pradakshina Marg’ around the temple was built by Chandrarao More. Even in 1674, Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj has also visited the Harihareshwar temple. Later, the temple was even renovated completely in 1723 by Bajirao Peshwa I after having been almost destroyed in a fire. Inside the main sanctum of the temple, there are idols of Shiva, Parvati, Vishnu and Brahma in the shape of a linga. The Trimurti are represented here in linga form, or “triple linga”. Quite close to the temple, there is are other two temple – Lord Kalbhairav and Goddess Yogeshwari, which are also must visit.

It is interesting to note that the image of Lord Kalabhairav, a manifestation of Lord Shiva, in this temple faces North. The image of Kalabhairav is almost invariably shown facing south. It is customary to pay tribute first to Kalabhairav, then to Lord Shiva and again Kalabhairav.

The parikrama path descends right down to the Arabian Sea, traversing the rocky shore at places. As you enter the pradakshina area, there is a Gayatri Tirth on the right side.Walking down the section of the hill known as Vishnugiri there’s Shuklateertha, which is nearby a number of other teerthas (ponds) that are named in the Puranas. These include Gayatri, Shool, Chakra, Naag, Gautam, Kamandalu, Kamdhenu, Gauri and Pandav teertha. Pandav Teertha is where the Pandavas performed the Pind Daan rite in honour of their father. Thousands of devotees come to this place each year to offer Pind Daan to their departed family members.
