When Lord Shiva released Ganga from his hair, how many of its streams appeared and which ones?
Answer:—
When King Bhagiratha pleased Brahma ji with his harsh penance, Brahma ji appeared and asked for a boon. Then King Bhagiratha prayed to Ganga ji for the salvation of his sixty thousand ancestors who were burnt to ashes due to the curse of Lord Kapil. Asked for a boon to send him to earth. Brahma ji said, O king! No one except Lord Shiva has the power to stop the flow of Ganga, hence please please Lord Shiva with your penance.Following the orders of Lord Brahma, King Bhagiratha performed severe penance for Lord Shiva, then Lord Shiva appeared pleased and assured to stop the flow of Ganga with his locks. After that Brahma ji released Ganga and Lord Shiva stopped the flow of Ganga on his head but Ganga remained entangled in his hair, then King Bhagiratha again pleased Lord Shiva with his penance and then Lord Shiva Released Ganga from his locks into Vindusarovar.Seven streams of Ganga emerged from there. These three streams Hladini, Pavani and Nalini moved towards the east. Suchakshu, Sita and Mahanadi Sindhu, these three streams flowed towards the west. The last seventh stream followed the chariot of Maharaj Bhagiratha and became famous by the names of Bhagirathi and Ganga. The same Ganga, following King Bhagiratha, reached the ashram of Lord Kapil in the east, where she saved sixty thousand sons of King Sagar and then merged into the ocean.By bringing Ganga ji to earth, Maharaj Bhagiratha not only benefited his ancestors but also the entire world.
Ganga is also called Tripathaga. It flows in the three worlds. Devlok, Prithvi Lok and Patal Lok. That is why he is called Tripathaga.
