How was Ravana born?

Years passed but the demons could not find any way to win over the gods. One day Sumali came out of the abyss with his daughter Kaikasi, when he saw Vishveshrava’s son Kuber going to his father. Sumali went back into the abyss out of fear of Kuber, but now he had found a way out of the abyss. Sumali told his daughter Kaikasi that daughter, I cannot find a suitable groom for you, hence she will have to go to sage Vishveshrava herself and propose marriage to him.
As per her father’s orders, Kaikasi reached the ashram of Rishi Vishveshrava. At that time, the sage was engrossed in his evening prayers. As soon as the sage opened his eyes, seeing the beautiful girl in front of him, he said that he knew what was the purpose of her coming. But the time when she has come to them is a very terrible time due to which even after being born in a Brahmin family, their sons will have demonic tendencies.
Then a certain sage fell at his feet and said that you are such a great ascetic then how can his children be like this. You will definitely have to bless your children. Then on Kaiksi’s prayer, sage Vishweshrava said that his youngest son would be of religious nature. Apart from this they cannot do anything. After some time, Kaikasi gave birth to a son who had ten heads. The sage named this son Dasgriva because he had ten heads.
After this, Kumbhakarna was born whose body was so huge that no one in the world was equal to him. After Kumbhakarna, daughter Surpanakha and then Vibhishana were born. In this way Dasgriva and his two brothers and sister were born.
Why did Ravana do penance for Brahma?

But as Dasgriva and Kumbhakarna grew up, their atrocities started increasing. How Dasgriva got the name Ravana

Bali also defeated Ravana
Once Ravana reached Mahishmatipuri while travelling. Sahasrarjun was the king of this very beautiful city. Ravana attacked this city to gain control over it. Sahasrarjun easily defeated Ravana in this war. Had he wanted, he could have killed Ravana but Sahasrarjun captured him because he was a descendant of the revered sage Pulastya. To free him from his captivity, Rishi Pulastya himself came to earth and Ravana was freed.Details of Ravana’s defeat by Bali are also found in the scriptures. It is said that King Bali of Kishkindh had traveled across the seven seas with Ravana in his arm. But then Ravana used his cunning intelligence and made Bali his friend. In this way Ravana was powerful but he had also tasted defeat.

Vedavati cut her hair and cursed Ravana that women would be the reason for his and his clan’s destruction.

Then Lord Rama killed the demon Atatayi by shooting an arrow at his navel. This day of Ravana’s killing was called Dussehra or Vijayadashami.
