The temple is located on the western side of the Then Pennar river and the temple is facing east. Then Pennar river is the holy theertham of this temple and this river is flowing in north to south direction in front of the temple and this is an auspicious formation.

The Moolavar (presiding deity) of the temple is Subramanya Swamy present along with his consorts Sri Valli Devi and Sri Deivanai Devi. The Moolavar Sri Valli Deivani sametha Subramanya Swamy beautifully graces the devotees by facing east in a 5 feet tall posture.

This temple is a sarpa dosha parihara sthalam as sarpams (snakes) lose their power in this temple. Even if a snake bites a person, the snake poison will not affect the person in this temple. If the person who has been bitten by snake, drinks the abisekha theertham (ablution water) of Lord Subramaniya Swamy in this temple and prays to the Lord, that person will not be affected by snake poison.

Temple History

Centuries back, there used to be an ardent Lord Murugan and Shiva devotee in Agaram village called Kaliappa Nayanar. He had 2 wives called Panjali Ammal and Kutti Ammal. One one day, when Kaliappa Nayanar was speaking to his friends under the existing Asoka tree on the Then Pennar river banks. A snake had bitten them at that time and Kaliappa Nayanar being an ardent Murugan devotee prayed to Lord Murugan that the snake poison shouldn’t affect them and if Lord Murugan saves them, he will construct a temple for Lord Murugan in that place. With the blessings of Lord Murugan, the people were saved. Then Kaliappa Nayanar built a temple for Lord Murugan there along with the help with village people.

Lord Murugan appeared in the dreams of Kaliappa Nayanar and informed that even if any snakes bites any person around this Murugan temple, they will not be affected by snake poison. Also, if anyone comes and prays to Lord Murugan in this temple, they will be relieved of unnatural death from their fate.

In 1984, the Utsavar moorthy of Sri Subramaniya Swamy was stolen in the night and when the thieves took the idol away, they felt that the idol was becoming heavier and heavier as time was going by. As they couldn’t bear the weight of the Urchavar idol, they buried the idol in Aadhanur lake in Tirupattur in Vellore District. Soon, few people noticed that lots of snakes were surrounding a particular place in the lake and alerted the elders in the village. However, no one could do anything as snakes were protecting that place for around 48 days (1 mandalam). Meanwhile, the thieves were caught by police and when the police came along with the caught thieves temple trustees and village place, all the snakes protecting a certain place so far simply moved away from that place at that time and disappeared. The place was then dug out and the Utsavar moorthy was then found there. The Utsavar idol was then restored back in the temple.

Devotees visit this temple to get relieved from Rahu/Ketu Dosha, delays in marriage will be removed and the devotees will be blessed with marriage boon and children (Puthra bhagyam). If a devotee prays for Gnana in this temple, the devotee will be blessed with Gnana and the growth of Gnana will lead to salvation.
