Share

Shri Dev Ravalnath is located at Chandgad village in Kolhapur district of Maharastra.Chandgad village is situated on the bank of Tamraparni river. Shri Dev Ravalnath of Chandgad village is the village deity and shrine.

Ravalnath is a guardian deity (Kshetrapala) who protects the locality from climatic disasters, witchcraft and snakebites.

The word Ravalnath is derived the word from the word Ruru, who is one of the Ashta Bhairava, eight forms of the god Bhairava – a ferocious aspect of the god Shiva. The iconography of Ravalnath is same as that of Bhairava. Word Ravala is also derived from the word “Ravana” which means “screaming”, “yelling”, which is same as “ruru” as mentioned earlier and vedic corpus attributes these epithets to different forms of “Rudra”.

The idol of Ravalnath in the idol temple is made of black stone and faces south. This idol is quadrupedal and is holding Khadga, Amritpatra, Trishul, Damru. On the head is a crown, around the neck is a sacrificial offering.

Shri Ravalnath of Chandgarh is considered the ruler of 84 villages in the area. Hence they are called Chaurashi Chobar.

Shri Karaveer Mahalakshmi Mata coronated Ravalnath on Shravan Shuddha Shashti. All the gems of Ratnasura (demon killed by Shri Dev Ravalnath and his army) were placed on Nath’s crown. Thus making the entire southern region free from fear, Ravalnath started staying at Ratnagiri. Shri Ravalnath is seated as village deity in many villages.

The first shrine of Ravalnath at Chandgarh was during the Pandava period. The name of the village ‘Chandgarh’ became proud due to sending the demon Chandrasur to this place. At that time this temple was built by Hemadpanthi. The Samadhi of Ajna Saptnik who founded this temple is fourteen steps away from the shrine of Ravalnath Temple. The devotee first bows before this samadhi, then enters the temple. The idol of Shri Ravalnath was established about fifty-four hundred years ago by Jijajirao, the father of Shahajiraj. It was first restored in the year 1617. At that time, there were only small temples and chautharas in the center. The second Jeernodaar took place during the reign of Sayajirao Sambhajirao Sawant-Bhosale. After that, during the Mughal Empire, the temple was destroyed a lot. In the year 1823, the third restoration took place.

Sri Dev Ravalnath sits on the heart throne of his devotees by removing their miseries and poverty.
