Rath Yatra / Lord Jagannath’s chariot is 45 feet high and has 16 wheels, all three chariots are special in themselves.
Lord Jagannath: Jagannath Puri has great importance among the four Dhams of Hindu religion. It is believed that Lord Vishnu takes bath in Rameshwaram, sleeps in Dwarka, meditates in Badrinath and eats in Puri. The journey to all four Dhams is considered incomplete without having darshan of Lord Jagannath.The Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath starts on Ashadh Shukla Dwitiya. It is said that the Lord goes to his aunt’s house in Janakpur through Rath Yatra. In Rath Yatra, Balramji’s chariot is called ‘Taladhwaj’. The chariot of Goddess Subhadra is called ‘Darpadalan’, while the chariot of Lord Jagannath is called ‘Nandighosh’ or ‘Garudadhwaj’.It remains at the back. The height, wheels and shape of these three chariots are different.

1. Chariot of Lord Jagannath
o This chariot is called Garudadhwaja, Kapidhwaja or Nandighosh. It has 16 wheels and the height is up to 13 and a half meters. About 1100 meters of red and yellow colored cloth is used to cover the chariot. 832 wooden pieces are used to make this chariot.
o The name of the charioteer of this chariot is Daruk.The protectors of this chariot are the bird king Garuda and Narasimha, the vehicles of Lord Vishnu. The name of the flag on the chariot is Trilokyamohini. The chariot has two gatekeepers named Jai and Vijay.
o The names of the horses of this chariot are Shankha, Balahak, Shwet and Haridashwa, whose color is white. Apart from this, there is also a conch and Sudarshan pillar to protect the chariot of Lord Jagannath. The rope with which the chariot is pulled is known as Shankhchud (a type of snake).
o In this chariot, apart from Lord Jagannath, other supporting deities are Varaha,There are also Govardhan, Krishna, Nrisimha, Ram, Narayan, Trivikram, Hanuman and Rudra. Eight sages also accompany the chariot of Lord Jagannath, whose names are Narada, Deval, Vyas, Shuka, Parashar, Vishishtha, Vishwamitra and Rudra.
2. Balram ji’s chariot
o The name of this chariot is Taladhwaj. This chariot is 13.2 meters high and has 14 wheels, which is made of red, green colored cloth and 763 pieces of wood. The protectors of this chariot are Vasudev and the charioteer Matali. The name of the flag of his chariot is Unani.
o This chariot has four black horses. Whose name is Tribra, Ghora,She is long-haired and golden-faced. This chariot has two gatekeepers named Nand and Sunand. There are also plows and pestles to protect the chariot. The names of the powers of his chariot are Brahma and Shiva. There is a rope in the form of Vasuki snake to pull his chariot.
o Apart from Balram ji, other assistant deities in this chariot are Ganesha, Kartikeya,There are Sarvamangal, Pralambari, Halayudh, Mrityunjay, Natvar, Mukteshwar and Sheshdev. Sages Angira, Paulastya, Pulah, Asasti, Mudgal, Atreya and Kashyap also move along with Balram ji’s chariot.
3. Subhadra ji’s chariot
o The name of Subhadra’s chariot is Devdalan. Its other names are Darpadalan and Padmadhwaj. This 12.9 meter high 12 wheeled chariot uses 593 pieces of wood along with red and black cloth.
o The protector of this chariot is Jayadurga and the charioteer is Arjun. The gatekeepers of this chariot are Ganga and Yamuna. The name of the flag of his chariot is Nadambika.To protect his chariot, he has weapons in the form of Padma and Kalhar.
o The names of the powers of this chariot are Chakra and Bhuvaneshwari. Subhadra ji’s chariot has four red horses. Whose names are Rochik, Mochik, Jita and Aparajita. The rope that pulls this chariot is called Swarnachuda.
o Apart from Subhadra ji, the assistant goddesses in the chariot are Chandi, Chamunda, Ugratara, Vanadurga, Varahi,There are goddesses named Shyama, Kali, Mangala and Vimala. Sages Bhrigu, Suparva, Vraj, Shringi, Dhruva and Uluk accompany his chariot.
