Mythological and popular story of Somvati Amavasya
There was a poor Brahmin family. Apart from the husband and wife, there was also a daughter in that family. That daughter slowly started growing up. With time and increasing age, all the feminine qualities were developing in that daughter. That girl was beautiful, cultured and talented. But due to being poor he was not able to get married.
One day a saintly king came to that Brahmin’s house. He was very pleased with the girl’s spirit of service. While blessing the girl for a long life, the sage said that there is no marriageable line in the palm of this girl.
Then the Brahmin couple asked the sage for a solution, what should the girl do so that marriage is possible in her hands. After thinking for some time, the sadhu told with his insight that in a village at some distance away, a woman of Dhobin caste named Sona lives with her son and daughter-in-law, who is very well-mannered and devoted to her husband. Is.
Then the Brahmin couple asked the sage for a solution, what should the girl do so that marriage is possible in her hands. After thinking for some time, the Sadhu told with his insight that in a village at some distance away, a woman of Dhobin caste named Sona lives with her son and daughter-in-law. Then the Brahmin couple asked the sage for a solution, what should the girl do so that marriage is possible in her hands. After thinking for some time, the sage meditated with his insight and told that at some distance In a village, a woman of washerman caste named Sona lives with her son and daughter-in-law, who are very well-mannered and devoted to her husband.
If this girl serves him and that woman applies the vermilion of her wish on his marriage, and after that the girl gets married, then the possibility of widowhood of this girl can be erased. The monk also told that the woman does not go anywhere.
Hearing this, the Brahmin asked her daughter to serve the washerman. Next day the girl would wake up early in the morning, go to the gold washer’s house, do the cleaning and all the other things and return to her home.
One day Sona the washerwoman asks her daughter-in-law, ‘You wake up in the morning and do all the work and you don’t even realize it. The daughter-in-law said- Mother, I thought that you wake up in the morning and finish all the work yourself. I wake up late. On this, both mother-in-law and daughter-in-law started keeping an eye on who is the one who does all the household work in the morning and goes away.
After several days, the washerman saw a girl coming into the dark house and leaving after doing all the work. When she started to leave, Sona the washerwoman fell at her feet and asked, “Who are you and why do you work in my house secretly like this?”
Then the girl told everything said by the sage. Sona the washerwoman was devoted to her husband and was bright. She agreed. Sona Dhobin’s husband was a little unwell. He asked his daughter-in-law to stay at home till his return.
As soon as the gold washerman applied the vermillion of his maang on the girl’s maang, her husband died. He came to know about this. She left home without water, thinking that if she found a Peepal tree somewhere on the way, she would take water only by offering Bhanwari to it and circling around it.
That day was Somvati Amavasya. Instead of the pua-dish found at the Brahmin’s house, he circled the Peepal tree 108 times with pieces of brick and then drank water. As soon as she did this, her husband’s dead body came back to life. The washerman’s husband came back to life.
That is why the person who gives Bhanwari on every Amavasya day, starting from the day of Somvati Amavasya, his happiness and good fortune increases. All the gods reside in the Peepal tree. Therefore, the person who is unable to do so on every Amavasya, if he offers Bhanwari of 108 items and worships the gold washerman and Gauri-Ganesh on the Amavasya day falling on Monday, he gets unbroken good fortune.
There is a popular tradition that on the first Somvati Amavasya, Bhanwari of paddy, betel leaves, turmeric, vermilion and betel nut is given. After that, on the Somvati Amavasya, a Bhanwari of fruits, sweets, suhaag material, food items etc. is given as per one’s capacity and then the goods offered on the Bhanwari can be given to any deserving Brahmin, sister-in-law or nephew.
