Center of Faith Shri Pataleshwar Mahadev Temple

The ancient Shri Pataleshwar Mahadev Shiva Temple of village Sadatbari, located seven kilometers away from Bahjoi Nagar, has remained a center of faith for Shiva devotees for hundred years. Established on 7 September 1902, this temple celebrated its centenary year on 7 September 2005. Shiva devotees visit the temple every Monday to have darshan of Lord Pataleshwar.

Village Sadatbari of development block Bahjoi was once known as Dhimarbari. It is said that a century ago this village was dominated by Dhimar caste. Later the Syeds camped here and a large number of people of the Syed community settled due to which this small village was named Sadatbari. One day, Lord Shiva gave a dream to Sahu Bhikhari Das, son of Sahu Tularam Vaishya, the landlord of the area, and said that he has become a farmer in this field. Where shepherds make the edge of hoofs from stones. When the barren place was excavated, only a stone was seen on which the shepherds often used to sharpen their hoes etc. As the digging work was done at the stone place, the Shivalinga started sitting in the ground.

On seeing this miracle of Shivalinga, Tularam reached there and apologized to the Lord and requested him to reveal his form. Then the process of starting the construction of the temple started. Shivalinga was given the name of Pataleshwar. It is said that some people protested strongly and stopped the construction. There is talk that many of the opponents have developed vitiligo. Later, people left their opposition to the decision of the temple and started building the temple day and night. In this way the Pataleshwar temple was finalized on 7 December 1902. At present, devotees from many states reach Sadat Bari to have darshan of Shivling and perform Jalabhishek in Pataleshwar temple. On Shivteras of Sawan and Phalgun months, a fair is organized near the temple premises, in which devotees from different provinces come here.
