Chitreshwar Shiv Temple is 3000 years old

Chitreshwar Shiv Temple is the center of faith of the people of three states.

History :

There is an ancient temple of Lord Shiva in Chitreshwar, adjacent to the Bengal-Odisha border, 12 km from Baharagora, the confluence of the three states. A temple where devotees from the three states of Jharkhand, Bengal and Odisha come to worship for 365 days. There is no one to tell when and who built the temple. There is a lack of historical evidence related to the temple. But, local elders believe that the worship of Shivalinga started here about 3000 thousand years ago. Before independence, this area remained under Dhalbhum State. There was a constant struggle between the ruler of Gopivallabhpur region of West Bengal and the ruler of Dhalbhum over the rights over the temple. People believe that due to the resentment arising from the conflict between the two, Shivalinga broke into two pieces. Even today the same broken Shivalinga is worshipped. There is no such practice as a permanent or chief priest in Chitreshwar Shiva temple. The worship work is being continued by the priests of various Brahmin families whose ancestors also used to perform the pujas here. There are seven-eight priests here who, when the devotees arrive, allow them to enter the temple and perform puja. At other places, Shravan lasts only for one month, but in Chitreshwaradham, this Shravan lasts for one and a half months, because according to the calendar of Oriya and Bengali speaking people, Shravan starts about 15 days before the Hindi calendar. According to Hindi belief, the month of Shravan is from full moon to full moon.

Chitreshwar Temple is the center of faith of the people of Seemanchal of the three states. On special occasions, the crowd is so huge that we have to take help from the administration.

There is Chitreshwar temple in Baharagora block under East Singhbhum district. The temple was constructed about four hundred years ago. This temple has Garvagriha Avam Mandap. Shivalinga is installed in the Garvagriha. There are also some Bhruna plaques at the entrance of the premises of this temple which are very artistic.
