Legend
Lord Brahma, the creator, had two daughters: Kadru and Vinata. Sage Kashyap married both sisters. Having two wives brought him immense happiness. One day, both sisters sought boons from the sage. Kadru wished to give birth to 100 serpents, while Vinata desired two sons who would be mightier than the serpent offspring. Kashyap granted their wishes.
Kadru soon gave birth to 100 serpents, while Vinata laid two eggs and kept them in a vessel. Even after 500 years, Vinata hadn’t borne any children. Impatient, she broke open the eggs prematurely. From one egg emerged a son with a head and body but no legs. Enraged, the newborn cursed his mother, saying, “Out of greed, you broke the eggs prematurely and disrupted my formation. Therefore, I curse you to become a servant. However, after 500 years, your second son will be born and free you from this servitude.”
Feeling remorseful for cursing his mother, the son, named Arun, started crying. Hearing his cries, Sage Narada appeared and consoled him, saying, “Whatever has happened is by the will of the divine. Go to the forest and worship the Shiva Linga located in the northern direction. This will help you overcome your feelings of guilt.”
Arun went to Mahakal forest and performed penance by worshiping the Shiva Linga, which resided in a cave. Pleased with Arun’s devotion, Lord Shiva blessed him and granted him the boon of becoming the charioteer of the Sun God. From that moment, the Shiva Linga came to be known as Aruneshwar.
