Ramlingeshwaram/Manavari Sivan Kovil Bangadeniya,Sri Lanka

Share

A Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and connected Ramayana. The Ramayana narrative from Sri Lanka confirms that, following the conclusion of his battle with King Ravana to free Sita, Lord Rama initially installed and prayed at the Shiva lingam in Manavari. The lingam in Rameshwaram, India, is the only other lingam named after him, according to legend. A number of local and Indian tourists visit the Manavari Temple in Chilaw each year, which is one of the important Hindu temples connected to the Ramayana Sri Lanka Yatra.

Since Rama built the lingam in the Manavari temple, it is currently known as Ramalingam. A lingam is a symbol of Shiva, and Rama is an avatar of Vishnu, according to the epic Ramayana.
Hinduism regards Ramalingam as an exceptional object of worship. The Ramalingam at the Manavari Temple and the Rameswaram in Rameswaram, India, the holiest site in Tamil Nadu, are the only two lingams in the world bearing the name of Lord Rama.

Manavari Temple is dedicated to Lord Siva. Lord Rama, after killing Ravana, to rid himself of the Bramha Hasthi Dosam, (a curse,) prayed to Lord Siva, and was instructed to install five Lingams. This was the first, and was made by rama by his own hands using the soil from the pond nearby. The second one is in Rameshwaram.
