The secret of the three lines of Tripund made on Shivling.
Usually, different types of Tilak are seen on the foreheads of saints and followers of different sects. Tilak is the identity of different sects, Akharas and cults. In Hinduism, all the sects, cults and cults of saints have different Tilak. People apply different types of Tilak according to their choice.
Tilak of Shaiva tradition is called – “Tripund”
The three horizontal lines drawn on Lord Shiva’s forehead and on the Shivling with white sandalwood or ash are called Tripund. These are a part of Lord Shiva’s makeup. In the Shaivite tradition, Shaivite monks draw three horizontal lines on the forehead with sandalwood or ash, called Tripund.
Taking ashes with the middle three fingers, Tripund should be applied on the forehead with devotion. Tripund is applied from the forehead to the eyes and from the forehead to the eyebrows (Bhrakuti).
The ash should be applied by mixing it with water before noon, by mixing it with sandalwood in the afternoon and in the evening only dry ash should be applied in the form of Tripund.

Gaurishankar Tilak…
Some devotees of Shiva apply Tripund of Lord Shiva and put a dot of roli in the middle for Mata Gauri. They consider this to be the form of Gaurishankar.
Among the worshippers of Gaurishankar, some first apply a dot and then Tripund, while some first apply Tripund and then put a dot.
Those who worship only Bhagvati apply only the red dot as a tilak.
In the Shaivite tradition, when sects like Aghori, Kapalik, Tantrik change, the method of applying the tilak also changes.
