Story of Abhayeshwar Mahadev
When one cycle of creation ended, the Sun and the Moon also disappeared. Brahma was worried about the next cycle of creation. When he was thinking this, two tears flowed from his eyes.
As the tears fell on the earth, they transformed into two demons and started chasing Brahma. Brahma ran towards the sea and took refuge in the abode of Lord Vishnu. The demons were now searching for both Brahma and Lord Vishnu.
Then Brahma and Vishnu decided to worship the Shivalinga situated to the south of Nripureshwar Mahadev in Mahakal forest (present day Ujjain).
Both of them reached Mahakal forest and worshiped Shivalinga.
Shiva appeared before him and learned that the demons were chasing Brahma and Vishnu. Shiva asked Brahma and Vishnu to hide in his stomach. Later, when demons appeared, Shiva destroyed them.
Then Brahma and Vishnu came out of Shiva’s stomach and asked for a boon.
Brahma and Vishnu prayed to Shiva that whoever prayed here would attain fearlessness.
Shiva granted it and from that time the Shivalinga is known as Abhayeshwar Mahadev.
