You all know the great ascetic Agastya Rishi situated in Ujjain, but perhaps you may not know that when he was accused of killing Brahma and his penance was broken, then on the request of Brahma ji, Agastya Rishi came to perform penance at this Shivalinga. . After receiving blessings from him, he not only became free from the sin of killing a Brahma. Rather, with the blessings of Lord Shiva, this Shivalinga became famous by the name of Shri Agastyeshwar Mahadev after the name of sage Agastya.

The temple of Shri Agastyeshwar Mahadev, who holds the first place among 84 Mahadevs, is located in the courtyard of Santoshi Mata Temple behind Harsiddhi Mata Temple, which is very ancient. While giving information, the priest of the temple, Pandit Manoj Puri said that this Shivalinga is Swayambhu, which is made of black stone and also has the shape of a pyramid.

In this temple, along with the statues of Lord Ganesha, Parvati and Kartikeya, the statues of dancing Ganesha, Mata Sati’s Charan Paduka, Sati Stambh, Hanuman ji, Bhairav, Kali are also very ancient. This temple was also damaged during the vandalism done by the Mughal rulers in the past. This is the reason why there is an inscription in the temple, on which something is seen written in Urdu.

Shri Agastyeshwar Mahadev is such a Mahadev, with whose worship the journey of 84 Mahadevs begins. The story of Shri Agastyeshwar Mahadev mentioned in Skanda Purana tells that in ancient times, when the dominance of demons started increasing continuously, the gods were wandering here and there. When he saw the most brilliant sage Agastya performing penance, he tried to find out the reason behind his defeat from the demons.

Sage Agastya became extremely angry after being asked this question and due to the flame of anger coming from within him, these gods were burnt to ashes. After this incident, Sage Agastya became very distressed about the sin of killing Brahma, because his penance was broken by this sin. At the same time, he was also accused of Brahma murder. To save himself from this sin of killing Brahma, Agastya approached Rishi Brahma, where he repented and asked for a solution to this sin.

Lord Brahma asked Rishi Agastya to worship the Shivalinga situated in Mahakal forest, following his advice, Rishi Agastya reached Mahakal forest. Where he worshiped this Shivalinga and performed rigorous penance, due to which Lord Shiva appeared pleased and along with liberating Rishi Agastya from the sin of killing a Brahma, he also gave him the boon that the Shivalinga you worshiped with true heart. Have done. Now this Shivalinga will be known by your name as Shri Agastyeshwar Mahadev.

By worshiping the miraculous Shivalinga on Ashtami, Chaturdashi and Friday, all the wishes are fulfilled and one gets freedom from all troubles.
