Arulmigu Mundhi Vinayagar Temple

Arulmigu Mundhi Vinayagar Temple also known as Sri Puliakulam Vinayagar Temple is a Hindu temple located at Puliyakuam locality of Coimbatore. It is one of the prominent Ganesha temples in Tamilnadu.Built-in the year 1993, the temple has the largest Ganesh idol in the entire Asia. The idol of the Lord stands about 20 feet tall and is over 11 feet broad sculpted from a single massive rock by 21 highly skilled sculptors.

The idol of Lord Ganesha is an illustration of attentive work and mathematical calculation as well. The sculptors who created the idol are said to have gone through a meticulous search operation.
After many attempts they found a rock from a pit which was 20 feet in depth in a place called Oothukuli near Coimbatore. The sculptors were extremely devotional and it took 6 long years to complete the idol.

Lord Ganesha’s grand presence, sitting atop a lotus flower with a (Amruth Kalasa) pot of nectar on his trunk. The pot symbolizes blessings from the Hindu Goddess of Wealth Mahalakshmi. The idol has four hands-one holding an ivory piece for writing the Mahabharata, one holding an Angusa, one holding a jackfruit,
and the fourth holding a whip. There’s even a serpent wrapped around his hips and there is another lotus flower seen as an offering to Lord Ganesha on his right foot.

The deity here is known as Vighnaharta and is believed as visiting this temple will relieve the sufferings and the pains. The major festival which is celebrated in the temple is Ganesha Chaturthi. It is a delight to see the idol beautifully decorated with tons of flowers. Elaborate rituals are followed and many people come to visit and get blessings from the Lord. It is a 10-day festival celebrated in the month of August-September, during the Hindu month called Bhadrapada.
