Earlier this area was thick and dense forest, full of wild animals. According to the Mahantji “Once a shepherd came to this place with his herd. He started chopping grass on the forehead of Shivlinga, and when he hit the grass with his axe, it slipped and hit the Shivlinga and blood started flowing through Shivlinga, on seeing this he ran away, as the news reached the ears of then “MAHANT HANUMAN PURI.” He came with his people and started digging the place, but they didn’t get any end of that Shivlinga and he buried the Shivlinga. On that night Mahantji saw the lila of Lord Shiva in dreams & he also heard a divine voice ordering “get up and be prepared for my duty”, he should worship him on that right place where they buried the Shivlinga and the temple was built on that same place.”Earlier the place here used to be forest, due to this the temple name was VANKHANDINATH as time passed it was changed to BARKHANDINATH. On reaching Baba Barkhandi Nath Temple the people come to know how the people get relief/cured from problems, ills & how Lord Shiva can fulfill there expectations.
