Baba Harihar Nath Mandir

Share

Harihar Temple is situated on the banks of Gandak and Ganga in Sonpur. This temple is dedicated to Vishnu (Hari) and Shiva (Hara).
Baba Hariharnath Shivlinga is the only Shivalinga in the world which has the figure of Shiva (Hara) in half and the figure of Vishnu (Hari) in the remaining part. Both the gods sitting in the same sanctum sanctorum together are called Harihar. It is believed that it was established by Brahma himself to bring Shaiva and Vaishnav sects closer to each other. The mythology of Gaj-Grah is also a proof. There is also a fact that after a long struggle at this very place, there was a truce between Shaiva and Vaishnav followers. According to the story, Shri Ramchandra, while going to Janakpur with Guru Vishwamitra, had stopped here and established Hari and Har. His footprints are present in Ramchaura located in Hajipur. In this area, people of Shaiva, Vaishnav and Shakta sects together take bath and Jalabhishek on Kartik Purnima. Before 1757, the temple was made of timber and black stone blocks.
