Shahjahanpur. The temple of Baba Vishwanath in Townhall is the main center of faith of Shiva devotees. Since the establishment of the temple, hundreds of people come here every day for darshan. There is a huge crowd of devotees on Mahashivratri. Complete information about the temple is available in historian Dr. NC Mehrotra’s book titled Shahjahanpur: Historical and Cultural Heritage.

Historian Dr. NC Mehrotra told that in the year 1953, Vishan Chandra Seth became the Chairman of the Municipal Council. At that time there was a guava orchard near the municipality office. He resolved to build a temple in this very garden. There was a lot of opposition to the construction of the temple in the beginning. It is said that even before the inspection of the then District Magistrate, some stones were placed under a tree in the garden and worship was started. Later, a heavy stone in the shape of Shivalinga was brought from the house of Sardar Darshan Singh, it was installed and worship of the same started.

वOn one hand, a legal battle was being fought regarding the construction of the temple, while on the other hand, the public started giving an application to the Municipality Chairman demanding the construction of the temple. Meanwhile, on May 4, 1956, Baba Vishwanath Temple Management Committee was also registered. In the same sequence, on January 21, 1957, when the then state minister Syed Ali Zaheer came to Shahjahanpur, the committee gave him a memorandum asking for the construction of the temple.
After this, due to the efforts of Minister Vichitra Narayan Sharma, orders were given to lift the ban on temple renovation. A memorandum was given to the then Chief Minister Dr. Sampurnanand. Also the construction of the temple was started. The foundation stone of Baba Vishwanath Yatri Niwas was laid near the temple on 25 February 1966.
