Vaidyanath Temple, also known as Baba Vaidyanath Dham or Vaidyanath Dham, is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, and one of the most revered places where Shiva resides. It is located in Deoghar in the Santhal Pargana division of Jharkhand state, India. It is a temple complex consisting of the main temple of Baba Baidyanath, where the Jyotirlinga is installed, and 21 other temples.According to Hindu beliefs, the demon king Ravana worshiped Shiva at this place to gain boons, which he later used to wreak havoc on the world. Ravana offered his ten heads one after the other to Shiva as a symbol of sacrifice. Pleased with this, Shiva descended to heal the injured Ravana. Since he worked as a doctor, he is called Vaidya (“doctor”). The name of the temple is due to this form of Shiva.
Kanwar Yatra is an annual pilgrimage for devotees of Shiva, known as Kanwariya (Kanwariya) or “Bhole” (भोले). They go to the Hindu pilgrimage site of Sultanganj in Bihar to fetch the holy water of the Ganges. Lakhs of people collect holy water from the Ganga and carry it hundreds of miles as offering to the Baidyanath temple in Jharkhand.

legend
According to mythology, Ravana was doing penance in the Himalayan region to please Lord Shiva. He offered his nine heads to Lord Shiva as a gift. As he prepared to cut off his tenth head, Shiva appeared before him, expressed satisfaction with the offering and asked what boon he desired. Ravana asked to take the ‘Kamna Linga’ to the island of Lanka. He also expressed his desire to take Lord Shiva from Kailash to Lanka.
Lord Shiva agreed after stipulating a condition. He said that if the Lingam was placed on the way, it would become the abode of the deity and could never be moved. When the gods of the celestial world heard that Lord Shiva had left his home on Mount Kailash, they became worried. He sought solution from Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu asked Varuna, the god associated with water, to enter Ravana’s stomach through Achaman (drinking water from the palm). As a result, after performing the Achamana ritual, Ravana departed for Lanka with the Lingam and experienced the need to urinate in the vicinity of Deoghar. The story is that Lord Vishnu took the form of a cowherd named Baiju. When Ravana went to urinate, he gave a penis to this cowherd. Baiju placed the Lingam on the ground. Upon Ravana’s return, he attempted to displace the Lingam, but failed in his attempt. He became upset and started pressing his thumb on the penis before leaving. Shiva Lingam was then worshiped by Brahma, Vishnu and other deities. Since then, Mahadev has resided in Deoghar in the form of the incarnation of “Kamna Linga”.
