Baksei Chamkrong Temple Siem Reap,Cambodia

Share

Baksei Chamkrong is a 10th-century Hindu temple located near the south gate of Angkor Thom in Cambodia. Constructed during the reign of King Harshavarman I and completed by King Rajendravarman II, it is dedicated to Shiva and originally housed a golden statue of the deity.

The temple’s name, meaning “The Bird Who Shelters Under Its Wings,” originates from a legend where a king, fleeing Angkor during a siege, was protected by a giant bird.

Architecturally, Baksei Chamkrong is a four-tiered pyramid temple, standing 13 meters tall with a 27-meter-wide base, primarily constructed from laterite. Atop the pyramid is a brick and sandstone sanctuary tower, notable for its intricate carvings, including a lintel depicting Indra on his three-headed elephant, Airavata.

Visitors often make a brief stop at this temple while exploring the Angkor complex, appreciating its unique pyramid structure and historical significance.
