Bhauna Devi Temple, dedicated to an incarnation of Goddess Durga, is located in Bhataraujakhan, Uttarakhand, and holds significant historical and cultural importance in the region.

History and Legends

According to local folklore, this temple is approximately 250 years old and is revered by the people of both the Garhwal and Kumaon regions. The temple stands on a scenic mountain in Jihad village, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding natural beauty.

It is believed that Maa Bhauna Devi was originally brought from Garhwal to Kumaon. A prominent legend attributes the establishment of the temple to the courageous warrior Tilu Rauteli, who is said to have installed the deity after her victory over the Katyuri army.

Initially, the goddess was worshipped near Jihad village, but later, she was enshrined on a beautiful peak overlooking the area. Until 1945, there was a modest structure, which was later expanded, and the idol of the Goddess was formally installed. The temple’s roof, entirely made of stone, reflects traditional Kumaoni architecture.

Religious Significance

The temple is a center of unwavering devotion for the local population. Maa Bhauna Devi is regarded as a guardian deity who protects the villagers and blesses them with prosperity. Devotees believe that praying with a pure heart can fulfill their wishes, and numerous tales of miracles associated with the temple strengthen this belief.

The *Sthalapurana* (local lore) narrates that the temple stands atop a hill under which lies a vast reservoir of water. This adds to the mystical aura of the temple and its surroundings.

Navratri is the most prominent festival celebrated at the temple, drawing devotees from across the region. During this nine-day festival, the temple comes alive with special prayers, rituals, and cultural performances. The premises are adorned with lights and decorations, creating a vibrant and deeply spiritual ambiance.

The temple also hosts an annual fair in honor of Bhauna Devi, which is a significant cultural event. This fair showcases traditional music, dance, and local delicacies, offering a glimpse into the rich heritage of Uttarakhand.
