Biahuti Bhawan Ayodhya
Biahuti Bhavan: The temple in Ayodhya where the marriage of Ram and Janaki is considered worship and where Ramayana ends with Ram going into the world.
The area with the marriage altar in the temple is considered as Janakpur, the part where Ram and Siya were swinging is Ayodhya.
It is believed that after marrying Janak’s daughter Sita, Ram stayed in Janakpur and did not go back to Ayodhya.
It’s seven o’clock in the evening. Two children dressed as Ram and Janaki are swinging on a swing decorated with Ashoka leaves. In front, a group of monks and nuns are sitting cross-legged with harmonium, dholak, jhal and other musical instruments and are singing –
‘jay rahe avadhesh lanan, mithalesh
lalee jee kee jay rahe…
piya sanvaaron so hai ghata, siya daaminee see chha rahee…..
baaten madhur ras-rahas ke aanand jal barasa rahe…’
All this continued till nine in the night. During this, cardamom was distributed as Prasad and perfume was applied on the back of the palm of every person sitting there. This scene is from inside the Biahuti Bhawan temple located in Ayodhya. Biahuti Bhavan means the building where a marriage has just been solemnized, where a marriage is about to take place or where marriages are often solemnized, but here it is a temple where Ram is worshiped only in the form of the groom.
Every evening in the month of Sawan, Ram and Janaki are made to swing on a swing and on the fifth day of every month, the marriage of Ram and Siya is organized. This is the only way to worship Ram for this temple or the forty sadhus living here.Bhola Baba, who lives in the marriage hall and makes the children look like Ram-Siya, says, ‘This is the only temple in Ayodhya which worships Ram as the groom. Our Ram does not get angry. He always keeps smiling. We and our Gurus have always seen Ram as a groom. Nothing else. We get our groom married and this is our worship.
While talking, Bhola Baba takes us around inside the temple. There is a marriage altar in the temple where the marriage of Ram and Janaki takes place and it happens through songs and music. Pointing towards a part of the temple, Bhola Baba says, ‘We consider the area with the marriage altar as Janakpur. The part where Ram and Siya were swinging is Ayodhya. When a marriage takes place, a procession leaves from there and comes to Janakpur.
While roaming in the courtyard of Biahuti Bhawan temple, seeing both Ayodhya and Janakpur in the same temple, the faith in the statement increases which says that Ram belongs to everyone and everyone’s Ram is also different. From this Ayodhya, Vishwa Hindu Parishad launched a whole movement by showing Ram as angry and aggressive and this is the only temple which worships Ram as a groom. During the puja, the beauty of Ram and Sita is sung with the help of folk songs and ragas. When we asked Vaikuntha Sharan, the current Mahant of Biahuti Bhavan Temple, how is there so much difference between the worship method of this temple and others? So in response to this question he said, ‘There is only one Ram. Who worships them in whatever form he wants. The thing to remember is that you will get Ram in the same form in which you worship him.
There is also Kohbar in this temple, which has special importance in the weddings held in the Hindi belt, especially in Bihar and UP. Pointing towards the Kohbar built in the temple, Bhola Baba says, ‘For us, Ramayana ends when Ram goes to the Kohbar after marriage.’ When asked the reason for this, he says, ‘The Ram who is mentioned in the later Ramayana. The works mentioned by him are not like our Ram.
There is also a belief in this temple that after marrying Parvati, Lord Shankar stayed at Kailash as his son-in-law. The way Vishnu remained in Ksheer Sagar after finding Lakshmi. In the same way, after marrying Janak’s daughter Sita, Ram stayed in Janakpur. Did not go back to Ayodhya.
While admiring the various paintings done on the walls of this temple complex and the grandeur of the complex, we met Sunil Sharan, a young monk of the temple. Sunil has been living here for the last ten years and according to him, the temple has changed the way Ram-Sita is worshiped in a large area of the country. He says, ‘Thousands of devotees associated with this temple are spread across the country. We and our team travel around throughout the year and organize Ram-Sita marriage at their place on Panchami.
It is believed in this temple that the most beautiful moment in Ram’s entire personality is when he went to Janakpur and became a groom. On the basis of these beliefs, the Biahuti Bhawan temple of Ayodhya worships him as a groom and urges its devotees to worship him.
Every society, every country, every class makes its own beliefs. It is a different matter that Ramcharitmanas written by Tulsidas has special importance in the Hindi belt, but it is also true that there are about three hundred Ramayanas in the entire country. Now finally let us tell you four lines of that song which the sages and saints of this temple often sing during the marriage ceremony of Ram-Janaki. The lyrics of the song are-
‘avadh nagar se janakapur aae var sundar he
madan mohan chhavi nirakhat lie hiye andar he
anupam sohe sir maur, bhooshan, pitaambar he
alak kutil bhauhaan, dhanusham kamal nayan sar he’
