Share

Chandimandir is a military cantonment of the Indian Army located in Panchkula district of Haryana state. Situated on the banks of Ghaggar River in the foothills of Shivalik Hills, this cantonment is adjacent to Panchkula city. The headquarters of the Western Command of the Indian Army is located in Chandimandir.Near Chandi Mandir, there is an area called Bir Ghaggar, where a temple of Chandi Devi is situated. Both the names Chandimandir and Chandigarh are named after this temple. This military camp was built in the late 1960s. During the Indo-Pak war of 1971, a new branch of the army (II Corps) was placed here, which moved to Ambala in the mid-80s. In 1985, the headquarters of the Western Command was shifted from Shimla to Chandimandir.
Chandimandir Cantonment is considered a part of Chandigarh Tricity, and bus service between the two cities is operated by Chandigarh Transport Undertaking. The cantonment also has a railway station, which comes under Ambala zone of Northern Railway.

Geography
The cantonment is at the foothills of the Shivalik mountains. There are many small hills in this area which are covered with dry thorny forests. Up to its northern edge the forests and hills continue into the valley between the foothills and the main Himalayas, including Baddi and Nalagarh. The trees are mostly Kikar (Acacia) and have an understory of many berry bushes.
