Shakti Sadhana has been prevalent in Mithila since time immemorial. Mahabharat era Shaktipeeth is a huge temple of Maa Chandika located in Biratpur village of Sonbarsa block of Saharsa district. It is one of the famous Siddhapeeths in the whole of India and is in waking state. Which is popularly known as Maa Chandika Sthan. History has it that this temple of Chandi Mata was built in 1775-80 AD by Dulari Devi alias Chameli Kumari, Masomat wife of Pran Singh, grandson of Raja Bhim Singh of Biratpur village. Maa Chandi is being worshiped here since the 11th century and there was a temple in another form. It was surveyed by the Asiatic Society of Bengal in 1872 AD, whose report is recorded in the Society’s Proceedings. The black colored stone inscription in the temple bears the name of Purbapurush Serb Singh Dev, a descendant of the 12th century king of Mithila. This temple is the most historical temple in North Bihar. The temple is so huge that its dome is visible from a distance of two kilometers. There is a huge banyan tree adjacent to the temple, which keeps the temple and the surrounding places shady. Due to less population around, this place is very quiet and beautiful and the environment is clean. There is a pond near the temple which is called Jivachha Kund. It is believed that a childless woman who takes bath in this pool and worships Mother Chandi after taking orders from the priest of the temple, she definitely gets the benefit of children. The height of this huge temple is 52 cubits. Stupas are built around the temple at a height of about 20 cubits, which is a symbol of Nav Durga. In the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, there are idols of Mahishasur Mardini and Ashtabhuja Durga apart from the idol of Mother Chandika. The strangest thing about this place is that there is a small water tank next to the idol of Maa Chandika. Whose exit is not on the outside. How much water should be offered to Bhagwati. However, the water level of the reservoir always remains the same. It is said that the water offered here reaches Ugratara of Mahishi and mother Katyayani in Khagaria district through a secret route. In this way, by worshiping here only, the devotees get the fruits of worshiping the Bhagwati of the three places. A special puja is performed here on every Tuesday throughout the year. In the Dussehra festival, there is a crowd of devotees coming from far and wide in the grand fair for all the ten days.
