Chandrabhaga Devi Shakti Peeth Temple

Share

Prabhas Shakti Peeth is also known as Chandrabhaga Devi Shakti Peeth is located near Veraval of Junagarh, Gujarat. It is the place where Sati’s Udara (Stomach) fell. Meaning of Chandrabhaga is throne of moon and depicts power.

History
The chief legend of Prayag relates to the creation of the Shakti Peethas. Sati, the daughter of Prajapati Daksha, was married to the god Shiva versus his wishes. Daksha arranged a great yajna but did not invite Sati and also Shiva. Uninvited, Sati reached the yajna-site, where Daksha ignored Sati as well as Shiva.

Sati was not able to withstand this insult. So, Devi Sati gave her life by jumping into the fire of Havan organized by her father King Daksh. When Lord Shiva was running around the planet carrying her body that Lord Vishnu divided the body into 51 parts utilizing his Sudarshan chakra. Out of those 51 parts, from which the ‘Stomach’ of Sati fell to this place. Here the idol of Devi Sati is worshipped as Maa Chandrabhaga (the moon goddess) and Lord Shiva as Vakratunda (one with the curved body).

Moon god Chandra married 27 daughters of King Daksha Prajapati. Out of 27 wives, the Chandra started loving only one wife Rohini and started neglecting remaining wives. Once 26 wives went to their father about Chandra partiality towards them, King Daksha tried to convince Moon god, but moon didn’t respect his uncle. Hence, Daksha got angry and cursed moon that he will lose his glow. In order to clear his curse, Moon prayed to Lord Shiva at Prabhas to regain his glow.

It is believed that once you visit this temple, married life leads to a very happy life. This is the reason that the newly married couple begin their happy life here only after receiving the blessings of Goddess Amba Mata.
