In Madhya Pradesh, after Mahakal of Ujjain and Omkareshwar temple of Mandsaur, the largest and unique fair of Mahashivratri is held in Chauragarh temple of Pachmarhi. Apart from Madhya Pradesh, a large number of devotees come here from Maharashtra and Gujarat. They climb extremely difficult stairs to have darshan of Mahadev.
Chauragarh temple of Lord Bholenath is situated on the peak of Chauragarh amidst the beautiful valleys and forests of hill station Pachmarhi in Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh. This is one of the most famous temples of Pachmarhi. Chauragarh temple is situated at a height of about 4200 feet, due to which a beautiful view of the surrounding forests, valleys and sunrise can be seen from here. For this reason, tourists visiting Pachmarhi often come here to visit. Along with this, Mahamela and Mahaabhishek are organized here during Mahashivratri. In which lakhs of devotees come. There is a belief associated with this also. To reach the temple, devotees have to climb approximately 1300 very difficult stairs.
The history of Chauragarh temple is many ages old. There are two legends associated with it. According to a popular story, it is believed that Lord Shiva had taken refuge in these hills to escape from Bhasmasur. According to another legend, it is believed that Chora Baba had performed penance for many years on this hill. After which Lord Shiva appeared to him and said that from today onwards this hill will be known as Choragarh. Since then this hill came to be known as Choragarh and this temple of Bholenath was built.
Trishul has great importance in the famous Chauragarh temple of Pachmarhi. Because of which every year thousands of devotees offer Trishul to fulfill their wishes. Actually, this is the time when Chora Baba did penance here. Pleased with this, Lord Shiva appeared before him and left his trident at this place. Exactly after that time, the tradition of offering Trishul started in Chauragarh temple.
One of the most famous temples and faith centers of Pachmarhi, Chauragarh Temple celebrates Mahashivratri or the birth anniversary of Lord Shiva with great pomp and joy every year. During this time, a huge trident is also offered in the temple. Which the devotees carry on their shoulders to the temple. It is believed that every year about one lakh devotees come here from different parts of the country to participate in this festival during Mahashivratri fair.
