Chitragupta Mahadeva Devalaya is located near Uppuguda Railway Station in Old City of Hyderabad. This is the only temple for “Chitragupta” in Telangana State.The Chitragupta Temple is dedicated to Chief Accountant of Yama.This 250 year old temple was built in 18th century by Kayasths.
The main duty of Lord Chitragupta is to keep the records of all human beings on Earth. He maintains a log of all the noble and misdeeds of an individual and proposes rewards or punishments accordingly. He has been entrusted with the task to determine if they will attain ‘Nirvana’ or go to heaven for their good deeds and receive reclamation from all worldly issues or be punished for their misdeeds in another life form or hell. This is the reason why he is referred to as the ‘Protector of Dharma’.
There is 250 years of history of this temple, this Chitragupta temple is spread over three and a half acres. However, locals say that Chitragupta comes to earth from time to time and this temple is his abode.
In this temple the idols of Chitragupta’s wives Nandini Iravati and Shobhavati are enshrined along with 12 sons of ‘Chitragupta’ who are Srivastav, Suryadwhaj, Nigam, Kulashresta, Mathur, Garg, Saxena, Gaud, Asthana, Ambasht, Bhatnagar and Valmiki idols are also seen in this temple.
Chitragupta is the seventeenth manasaputra of Brahma. He is believed to have been created from Brahma’s soul and mind and thus is allotted the right to write Vedas like a Brahmin, and also assigned the duty of a Kshatriya.
Origin of Chitragupta
One day, Parvati Devi asked Lord Brahma to create an individual who will maintain an account of the activities carried out by living beings. It is believed that Lord Brahma then drew an image of Chitragupta on a block of wood and then proceeded to give life to it. This tale is more famous and well-known in South India. In this story, Lord Chitragupta is portrayed with a nail and palm leaf. The nail is used for penning down on the palm leaf.
There is a belief that by worshiping Chitragupta, who is considered as the guru of Ketu planet by the Kayastha clans, the evil will be cured. Abhishekam’ is performed daily and special pooja is performed on Wednesdays for those who are affected by ‘Ketu Graha Dosha
