Shri Kankalitala Shaktipeeth Temple, also known as Kankalitala Temple, is a revered Hindu temple located in Birbhum district, West Bengal, India. This temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, sacred sites associated with the goddess Shakti.
According to mythology, the temple marks the spot where the waist (Kankal) of the goddess Sati fell during the cosmic dance of Lord Shiva (Tandava). This event is said to have occurred after Sati’s self-immolation, following her father Daksha’s disrespect towards her husband Shiva.
The temple is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Kali, an incarnation of Shakti. Devotees believe that the goddess resides here in the form of a pinda (a symbolic representation of the goddess).
Devotees visit the temple to offer prayers, perform puja rituals, and seek the blessings of Goddess Kali. it has a small pond on its side , and it has a beautiful small river in its back.
Sati’s waist landed at Kankalitala. It created a depression in the earth which later filled up with water and formed the sacred kund. It is repeatedly told that the actual body part now lies underneath this water. The Shakti of the temple is addressed as “Devgarbha” and the Bhairava as “Ruru“.
