Share

Koothur Sri dharmapureeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Koothur village, Kilvellur circle, Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu. Here the Presiding deity is called as Sri dharmapureeswarar and Mother is called as Sri dharmasamvardini.

This temple is about 1000 years old and now there is no way to go inside the temple and it has been occupied by people of other religions. Now the people at the back of the temple have a way to go back through the street. A sanctum facing west, in which Shiva is seated. Then there must be a south-facing sanctum nearby, but not even a trace of it exists today.

The sanctum sanctorum of the Lord is made of thousands of thin bricks. It has a front porch. It has a conical roof. Today, all of them are rotting at the root. This mandapam is also riddled with trees and vines and is in danger of collapsing anytime. Among the sub-temples, only the Ganesha shrine is seen in ruins today. Others are not even having brick.

A tin shed has been placed before the Lord. In it, Nandi is facing the Lord. Ambikai Dakshinamurthy, Sandikeswarar and Bhairava have been built on a long stage. Durga is at Vinayaka gate. A separate square lingam is also housed in a tin shed. On the south side of the temple is the Koil Theertha at present there are only thirteen families in the village. A Nandavanam has also been set up to restore this temple, which is left in the midst of various problems. On special days like Pradosham and Shivratri, devotees come and worship Shivacharya and perform pooja.
