Dharmrajeshwar Temple (Dhamnar) Chandwasa,Mandsaur,Madhya Pradesh

Dharmrajeshwar Temple is located in Chandwasa Village, in Mandsaur District, Madhya Pradesh. It is situated near Shamgarh and about 78 km from Mandsaur. The temple lies in a rocky hill area surrounded by greenery and peaceful forest.

Temple Age

This ancient temple was built during the 8th–9th century CE under the rule of the Gurjara-Pratihara Dynasty. It is more than 1,100 years old and stands as a beautiful example of early medieval Indian rock-cut architecture.

Deity Details

The temple is currently dedicated to Lord Shiva, and a Shiva Lingam is worshipped inside the sanctum. However, it is believed that the temple was originally built for Lord Vishnu. Even today, a Vishnu idol is seen above while the Shiva Lingam is placed below, symbolizing the unity of Shaivism and Vaishnavism.

Architecture

Dharmrajeshwar Temple is a monolithic rock-cut temple, meaning it is carved entirely from a single rock hill. The structure was created by cutting the rock from top to bottom, similar to the famous Kailasa Temple at Ellora Caves.

The temple includes a sanctum (garbhagriha), a pillared hall (mandapa), and a long rock-cut entrance passage. The walls are decorated with carvings of Hindu deities like Varaha, Sheshashayi Vishnu, and other divine figures. The temple complex also has smaller shrines carved nearby, forming a complete spiritual and architectural site.

History

The temple was constructed during the Pratihara period, which was known for promoting art, culture, and religion. Initially associated with Vishnu worship, the temple later became an important center for Shiva worship, showing the natural evolution of religious practices over time.

Close to the temple are the Dhamnar Caves, a group of ancient caves influenced by Buddhist traditions similar to Ajanta Caves. This shows that the region once had a strong connection to both Buddhism and Hinduism.

Sthalapurana

Long ago, the hills around Chandwasa Village were filled with silence and divine energy. It is believed that sages and monks meditated in the nearby Dhamnar Caves, making the region a powerful spiritual center.

Over time, the land became known as a place of Dharma (truth and righteousness). People believed that the power of Dharma protected this place, and so it came to be associated with Dharmaraja, the lord of justice. This is how the temple got its name Dharmrajeshwar.

During the time of the Gurjara-Pratihara Dynasty, devoted artisans carved a grand temple directly from the hill, believing that God already existed within the rock. The temple was first dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and beautiful carvings of his forms were created.

As time passed, devotion to Lord Shiva grew stronger, and a Shiva Lingam was installed. The temple then became a sacred place of Shiva worship. Even today, devotees believe that both Vishnu and Shiva bless this temple together, showing that all paths lead to the same divine truth.

The temple stands strong like Dharma itself, carved from solid rock, reminding devotees of truth, strength, and devotion. Many visitors feel deep peace here, as if the presence of ancient sages still remains in the hills.

Festivals

Mahashivratri is the main festival celebrated here. A local fair is held, and many devotees visit the temple. Special pooja, abhishekam, and night-long prayers are performed. The temple becomes vibrant with chanting and devotional activities.
