Famous story of Mata Anasuiya
Sati Anusuya was the wife of Maharishi Atri.
Who was famous for her devotion to her husband.
Anusuya’s place is very high among the Sati-Sadhvi women of India. She was born in a very high family and had the great ascetic Maharishi Atri, the mental son of Lord Brahma, as her husband. He had won the heart of Maharishi Atri with his continuous service and love. Wife of Atri Muni who was one of the twenty-four daughters of Daksh Prajapati.
He pleased Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh by performing penance and these trinity became their sons by the names of Som, Dattatreya and Durvasa respectively. Anusuya is famous for Pativrata religion. During the exile period, when Ram, Sita and Lakshman reached Maharishi Atri’s ashram in Chitrakoot, Anusuya taught Sita about the practice of pativrata dharma.
The intensity of her devotion to her husband, i.e. chastity, was so great that because of it, the gods traveling through the sky felt her majesty. For this reason she is also called ‘Sati Anasuya’.
Anasuya welcomed Ram, Sita and Lakshman in her ashram. He preached to Sita and also gave her a medicine of eternal beauty. He is counted first among the satis. In Kalidas’s ‘Shakuntalam’, a friend of Shakuntala named Anasuya has also been mentioned.
One day, Dev Rishi Narad ji reached Vishnulok, Shivlok and Brahmalok one by one in the absence of Vishnuji, Shivji and Brahmaji.
Going there, he praised Anusuiya’s devotion to her husband in front of Lakshmi ji, Parvati ji and Savitri ji and said that there is no greater devotion to her husband in the entire creation.
After listening to Narad ji, the three goddesses started thinking that what is there in Anusuiya’s patriotism that it is being discussed till heaven? The three goddesses became jealous of Anusuiya.
After Narad ji left from there, Savitri, Lakshmi and Parvati gathered at one place and started thinking about breaking Anusuiya’s religion of pativrata. They decided that they would send their husbands there and break Anusuiya’s vow of marriage.
When Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva reached their respective places, the three goddesses insisted on breaking Anusuiya’s vow of marriage. The three gods explained a lot that they should not make us commit this sin. But the three goddesses did not listen to him and in the end all three gods had to agree to this.
The three gods donned the guise of sages and reached the ashram of sage Atri. At that time Anusuiya ji was alone at the ashram. Seeing three guests in sadhu attire at the door, Anusuiya requested to have food. The three sages said that we will definitely accept your food. But on one condition that you will feed us naked.
Anusuiya, fearing the curse of the sages and the sin of being deprived of hospitality, prayed to God, O God! Make all three of them babies of the age of six months.
So that my vow to my husband is not broken and the sadhus get food and I do not incur the sin of not serving guests. By the grace of God, all three gods became six-month-old children and Anusuiya stripped all three of them, fed them milk and made them lie down in the cradle.
When the three gods did not return to their places, the goddesses became distraught. Then Narad came there and told the whole story that Anusuiya had turned all three gods into children due to her chastity.
Hearing this, the three goddesses reached Atri Rishi’s ashram and apologized to Mother Anusuiya and said that they had committed this mistake out of jealousy. Despite their repeated refusal, we sent them to do this heinous act. Please do them again in the same position.
We will be grateful to you. Hearing this, Atri Rishi’s wife Anusuiya brought the three children back to their original form. The three gods asked Rishi Atri and Anusuiya to ask for a boon. Then Anusuiya said that all three of you should come to our house as children and as sons. We are childless.
The three gods said amen and departed to their respective worlds along with their respective wives. Over time, Lord Vishnu in the form of Dattatreya, Brahma in the form of Moon and Lord Shiva in the form of Durvasa were born from the womb of Anusuiya.
।। Jai Sati Maa Anasuya ।।
Lalna is swinging like three gods,
Mother Anasuiya put the cradle…
The illusion of happiness cannot be contained,
Sometimes she takes me in her lap and swings the cradle…
Who will appreciate my luck today?
Lalna is swinging like three gods…
Come to my house, I have something to offer,
Forget God, it’s all cleverness today…
Such is their feeling among Satis,
Lalna is swinging like three gods…
Leaving heaven today, we went to the world of death,
Lived in the huts of sages…
Desires are destroyed in front of Sati,
Lalna is swinging like three gods…
Meanwhile Naradmuni came there,
Smile slowly in your mind…
Today I encountered the goddess of India,
Lalna is swinging like three gods…
Mother Anasuiya put the cradle,
Lalna is swinging like three gods…
