That is, even an unrighteous person, attached to matters, if he meets death in this Kashi region, he also does not have to come back to the world bondage. In the Matsya Purana, explaining the significance of this city, it is said – ‘Kashi is the only ultimate destination for humans devoid of chanting, meditation and knowledge and suffering. Dashashwamedh, Lolark, Bindumadhav, Keshav and Manikarnika are the five questions in the Ananda-Kanan of Shri Vishwanath. That’s why it’s called a “safe zone.” ‘

This story is told in the Puranas about this Jyotirlinga.

According to legend, the first

Lord Shiva lived in the Himalayas with his wife Parvati. So that there is no hindrance in the prestige of Lord Shiva, Parvati ji said that choose another place.

Lord Shiva liked the city of Varanasi of King Divodasa very much. In order to find a peaceful place for Lord Shiva, a sage named Nikumbh destroyed the city of Varanasi. But the king was adamant. The king pleased Brahma by doing severe penance and prayed to him to remove his sorrow.

Divodasa said that the gods lived in devaloka, the earth is for human beings. At the behest of Lord Brahma, Lord Shiva went to the Mandrachal mountain. He left but could not give up his fascination for the city of Kashi. Then Lord Vishnu ordered the king to go to Tapovan. After that Varanasi became the permanent residence of Mahadev ji and Shiva ji established the city of Varanasi on his Trishul. ❤ ️

According to legend, the second story

Once Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu had a debate as to who is greater. Then Brahma sat on the top of his vehicle Hansa and went out to find the upper end of the pillar and Vishnu went out to find the lower end. And then the light came from the ceiling.

Lord Shiva appeared in that light. Vishnu ji admitted that I could not find the last end. But Brahma ̄ ji lied that I have discovered. Then Shiva cursed Brahma that he would never be worshipped because he had lied to get himself worshipped. Then at the same place Shiva ji became seated in the form of Jyotirlinga.
