The story of the Jyotirlinga here is described in the Puranas in this way
Lord Ganesha and Lord Kartikeya, the sons of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, fell in love with each other. Kartikeya said that since he was older, he should get married first, but Lord Ganesha wanted to get married first. The two approached their parents, Bhavani and Shankar, to give a verdict on the dispute. His parents said, “Whoever among you travels around the earth and comes here first, he will be married first.” As soon as Kartikeya heard the condition, he ran to circumambulate the earth. Here the obese Shri Ganesh ji and his vehicle were also rats, how could they do the parikrama so quickly. There was a big problem in front of Ganesha. Shri Ganesh ji is certainly fatter than the body, but he is an ocean of wisdom. He thought for a while and requested his mother Parvati and father Devadhidev Maheshwar to sit on one seat. After the two of them sat on the seat, Shri Ganesh performed seven circumambulations of them, then performed the ritualistic worship.

Thus Shri Ganesh became the possessor of the fruits obtained from the circumambulation of the earth by circumambulating the parents. Both Shiva and Parvati were very pleased to see his shrewd intellect and they also got Sri Ganesh married. At the time when Swami Kartikeya returned after circumnavigating the whole earth, Shri Ganesh ji was already married to Siddhi and Buddhi, the daughters of Vishwaroop Prajapati. Not only this, Shri Ganesh ji also got two sons – ‘Kshem’ from his wife named ‘Siddhi’ and ‘Labh’ from his wife named Buddhi. Devarshi Narada, the wanderer and benefactor of the world, narrated this story to Swami Kartikeya. On hearing the news of the marriage of Shri Ganesh and the birth of a son, Swami Kartikeya was moved to tears. Angered by the incident, Karthik, following the protocol, touched the feet of his parents and left the place.
After getting separated from his parents, Kartik Swami started living on the Kronch mountain. Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati sent their son Kartikeya to Kronch Parvat to convince Lord Narada. Devarshi Narada tried to persuade Swami in many ways, but he did not return. After that, the soft-hearted mother Parvati became distraught in her son’s love. They reached the Kronch mountain with Lord Shiva. Here Swami Kartikeya got the news of the arrival of his parents at Kronch mountain and from there he went three yojanas i.e. thirty-six kilometres away. After the departure of Kartikeya, Lord Shiva appeared in the form of Jyotirlinga on that Krunch mountain, since then he became famous by the name of ‘Mallikarjun’ Jyotirlinga. ‘Mallika ‘is the name of Mata Parvati, while’ Arjun ‘is called Lord Shankar. Thus collectively the name ‘Mallikarjuna’ became famous in the world.
