Features of Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga
Rameshwaram is one of the holiest shrines of the Hindus.
It is said that at this place Shriramchandraji had worshiped Shiva and installed his idol before the expedition to Lanka.
The name of Rameshwaram in the Puranas is Gandhamadan mountain. The main temple of Rameshwaram is 120 feet high.
At a little distance from Rameswaram is a tank called Jata Tirtha. According to legend, Sri Rama washed his hair after the battle of Lanka.
Shriram established Navagraha here. The bridge started from here, so this is the original bridge.
This is where Devi killed Mahishasura.
At a distance of about thirty kilometres from Rameshwaram is a place named Dhanushkoti. Due to the confluence of the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean here, there is a law to perform Pitru Karma by considering Shradh Tirtha.
There are 24 pools of fresh water inside the temple. Lord Rama built these water tanks with his arrow.
Any devotee who offers Gangajal at Rameshwaram Dham gets liberated from the real life and attains salvation.
It is a beautiful conch-shaped island surrounded by the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal. ❤ ️
This story is mentioned in Skandpuran about the establishment of Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga.
According to legend, the first
When Sri Rama, Lakshmana, Hanuman and the monkeys reached the seashore with the army, they saw that the city of Lanka was across the sea. He began to think how to determine the distance of Lanka from the sea. This was a big problem for all of them because they had to bring Sita back from Ravana’s Lanka. Lord Ram used to worship Lord Shiva every day but due to this problem, he forgot to worship Lord Shiva on that day.
Lord Ram felt thirsty and asked for water. Even before taking the water, he remembered that he had not worshipped Lord Shiva today, then he made the body of Lord Shiva at the same place and started worshiping with a sincere heart.
She prayed to Lord Shiva, “Oh Lord! I am in great trouble, please solve my problem. The city of Lanka is on the other side of this sea, how can we cross it? Ravana has stolen Sita, he is also your devotee and he is always proud because of the boon given by you. Could you please solve my problem.
Then Lord Shiva appeared there and said with a happy heart that you are my most beloved devotee, your problem will definitely be solved. You ask. Then Ram ji said that ensure my victory in the war against Ravana and sit here for the welfare of the people forever. Then Lord Shiva granted him a boon and settled there forever.
The 2nd story
There is another story too. When Shri Ram was bringing back Sita after killing Ravana, he first crossed the sea and rested on the Gandhamadan mountain. When the great sage-maharshi came to know that Shri Ram had come here with Sita, they all reached there to seek her blessings.
Then the sages told Shri Ram that you are cursed with Brahma murder because you have destroyed the Pulastya clan. Then Sri Rama said, “You alone give me the solution to this problem, so that I can be freed from sin.” Then he would say: ‘O Allah! You build a Shivalinga here and worship it. Worship Lord Shiva. In this way you can be free from sins.
Hearing the words of the sages, Shri Ram ordered Hanuman to go to Mount Kailash and bring a linga. As per the order, Hanuman ji immediately reached Kailash Parvat. But they didn’t get sex.
He started praying to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva was pleased by this penance of Hanuman ji and appeared. Thus on attaining the lingam they immediately reached the Gandhamadan mountain. But it was too late for Hanuman.
A Shivlinga was to be installed there according to the muhurta prescribed by the sages. Then everyone decided that the Shivalinga should be built and installed by themselves and the worship should be done by law. Then this happened.
After the puja, when Hanuman came and saw that the installation had been done, he felt very sad and fell at the feet of Shri Ram. Then Shri Ram told about the installation of the Shivling that the muhurat should not pass so the Linga had to be installed.
But Hanuman was not satisfied. Then Shri Ram ji said that we uproot this established linga and re-establish the linga brought by you. Hanuman was very happy. As soon as the penis began to be uprooted, that penis did not get uprooted.
He was tough. He had become a monster. Hanuman made every effort to get rid of that linga, but he was not satisfied. Finally, Hanuman ji fell 3 km away and fell unconscious.
Mother Sita started crying out of love and then Hanuman ji came to his senses and looked at Shri Ram ji and saw the Supreme Brahman. Then he cried and begged forgiveness from Shri Ram. Then Shri Ramji explained to him that no power in this world can uproot the one by whom this Shivlinga is installed. You forgot.
Don’t make such a mistake. Showing such kindness to his devotee, he also installed the Shivlinga brought by Hanuman ji there. Hanuman was very happy. Thus the Shivlinga established by Ramji was named Rameshwar and the Shivlinga brought by Hanumanji was named Hanumadeshwar.
Sakshi Vinayak Temple, Sita Kund, Ekant Ram Temple, Amman Devi Temple, Kodandaramaswamy and Villoorani Kund are some of the places worth visiting in the vicinity. When pilgrims come here for darshan then they also go for tour to these other places. In fact, this place is such that by just visiting the Shivlinga, all the sufferings of the devotees are removed and the sins are freed.
