When Ganga appeared on earth through the sky, Lord Shankar held her in his hair. Lord Shiva did not allow it to come down to earth after wearing it in his hair, this made Ganga angry and cooled Lord Shiva’s body. Lord Shiva also tied Ganga in his hair in anger. For many Kalpa years, Ganga performed penance in her hair. Due to the worship of Bhagiratha, Ganga descended on earth and became the wife of the ocean. Once all the gods and goddesses reached Brahma Loka to praise Brahma, Ganga and the ocean also went there. Due to the speed of the wind, Ganga’s head was blown away, seeing this all the gods lowered their faces but the royal sage named Mahabhish kept looking at Ganga. Seeing this, Lord Brahma sent him to the earth. Seeing this, the ocean also cursed Ganga to live in the world of death. Ganga, who was mourning due to the curse, pleaded with Brahma. Brahma said that Ganga, you should visit and worship the Shivalinga situated to the south of Shipra in the Mahakal forest. Ganga came to Mahakal forest and worshiped Gangeshwar Mahadev with her friend Shipra. Ganga was freed from the curse by the darshan of Gangeshwar. At the same time, Samudra also appeared there and respected Ganga. It is believed that by having darshan of Gangeshwar, one gets the fruits of all the pilgrimages and a person attains the supreme state in the last moments.
