Lord Shiva’s temple built on a mound, the form of the idol is strange and this wish is fulfilled

Gokarnath temple located in Mathura. The importance of this temple is so much that it has even been mentioned in the Holy Geeta of Krishna. It is a religious belief that this temple of Gokarneshwar Mahadev dates back to the Dwapar era. The idol of Shiva installed in the temple is said to be the form of Mahakal. Come today let us tell you the story of Gokarnath Mahadev and some interesting things related to the temple.

Shiva is the ruler of Mathura
The pilgrimage site Mathura is surrounded by Lord Shiva on all sides. Yes, there are four Shiva temples at the four corners of Mathura, due to which Bholenath is known as Kshetrapal of Mathura. In the east side of Mathura, there is the ancient temple of Ghatleshwar, Bhuteshwar in the west, Rangeshwar Mahadev in the south and Gokarneshwar Mahadev in the north. Shri Gokarna Mahadev is also one of the four Mahadevs of Shri Mathura. This temple is built on a mound, this mound is called Gokarneshwar or Kailash.

importance of temple

This temple is dedicated to Lord Gokarnath. There is a belief about the temple that if a childless person worships Shri Gokarna Mahadev Ji and fasts for 16 Mondays, then he will definitely get a child. According to religious belief, the devotee who recites Lord Shiva’s Stotra and anoints him with sugarcane juice in Gokarneshwar Mahadev Temple for 40 consecutive days remains happy, healthy and prosperous.

How did the name Gokarnath come about?
Shri Gokarna ji’s father’s name was Atmadev and mother’s name was Dhundali. Both of them had no children. Once a sage gave a fruit to Shri Gokarna’s parents for their child and said that by eating it, both of them would have a highly knowledgeable son. Dhundali did not believe the sage’s words and fed the fruit to his cow. When the cow eats the fruit, Shri Gokarna ji is born from the ear of the cow. Due to being born from the ear of a cow, he (Go + Karna) was called Gokarnath.

Got a boon from Lord Shiva
Gokarna ji’s mother had adopted her sister’s son Dhundhakari to increase her lineage. On one hand, Gokarna was of religious nature since childhood, while on the other hand, Dhundhakari was of demonic nature since childhood. Due to which Dhundhakari dies untimely and his soul wanders. One night Dhundhakari comes in the dream of Shri Gokarna ji and says, ‘Liberate me from this ghost’. To liberate his brother, Shri Gokarna ji recites Bhagwat Geeta for seven days and the smoker gets freedom. After this incident, Shri Gokarna ji comes to the banks of Yamuna and does penance for Lord Shiva. Pleased with the penance, Lord Shiva grants Gokarna the boon of being worshiped in the name of Shri Gokarna Mahadev Ji in Kaliyuga.

The shape of the statue is something like this
The form of the idol of Gokarna Mahadev ji in the temple is such that his opposite hand is placed on his penis and his straight hand is placed on his mind. It is very important for any human being to control these two things because both his work and mind are very dynamic. Therefore, Shri Gokarna Mahadev Ji has controlled both of them. Devotees come from far and wide to see the strange form of the idol of Gokarna Mahadev.
