How and where was Lord Shiva born?
Vedas say that whatever is born will die, that is, whatever is created will perish. According to the Vedas, God or Supreme Soul is unborn, unmanifested, formless, qualityless and viceless. Meaning of unborn is one who has never been born and who will not be born again. Manifest means that which has not arisen from any womb but has self-manifested and Unmanifest means that which is not even self-manifested.
Nirakar means that which has no shape, Nirguna means that which does not have any quality of any kind, Nirvikar means which does not have any kind of disorder or defect.
Now the question arises that then what is Shiva? They were born or appeared in some form or the other only then they got married. That’s why he gave boons to many demons and also killed many demons.
Actually, when we say ‘Shiva’ it is talking about formless God and when we say ‘Sadashiv’ it is talking about God being a great soul and when we say Shankar or Mahesh it is talking about Mahadev, the husband of Sati or Parvati. Talk happens. That’s it, Hindus are not able to differentiate here and consider everyone the same. Lord Shankar is also often called Shiva.
How was Lord Shiva born?
According to Shivpuran, Lord Shankar is believed to have originated from Lord Sadashiv and Parashakti Ambika (not Parvati or Sati). That Ambika is also called Prakriti, Sarveshwari, Tridevjanani (mother of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh), Nitya and the root cause. That power manifested by Sadashiva has 8 arms. Parashakti, the mother goddess of the world, is endowed with various types of movements and wields many types of weapons. She is Durga, the better half of Kaalroop Sadashiv, the goddess of power.
Durga appeared from that Sadashiv. While enjoying in the blissful forest of Kashi, both of them once had a desire that they should create another man, on whom we would attain nirvana by placing the responsibility of creation (progeny etc.) on him. For this he manifested Vishnu with great desire. Thus, Vishnu’s mother and father are Kaalrupi Sadashiva and Parashakti Durga.
After creating Vishnu, Sadashiv and Shakti tried their best to create Brahmaji from their right body and immediately placed him in the lotus navel of Vishnu. Thus, Hiranyagarbha (Brahma) was born as a son from that lotus. Once there was a fight between Brahma and Vishnu for supremacy, then a pillar in the form of time came and stood in between.
Then Kaal in the form of Jyotirlinga said – ‘Sons, by doing penance both of you have obtained from me two acts named Srishti (birth) and Sthitti (upbringing). Similarly, Rudra and Maheshwar, my divine form, have received from me two other excellent acts, Sanhar (destruction) and Tirobhav (inaction), but they cannot receive any other act called Anugraha (kindness).
Both Rudra and Maheshwar have not forgotten their actions, so I have provided my likeness for them. Sadashiv says- ‘They (Rudra and Mahesh) keep vehicles like me, wear the same disguise as me and have weapons like me. He is similar to me in form, attire, vehicle, posture and actions.
Now there are 7 souls here – Brahma (God) to Sadashiv, Sadashiv to Durga. Sadashiv-Durga to Vishnu, Brahma, Rudra, Maheshwar. This proved that the originators of Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra and Mahesh are Kaalrupi Sadashiv and Durga.
Where were you born?
That time-form Brahma Sadashiv had created an area called ‘Shivalok’ with the same power. That beautiful area is called ‘Kashi’. That is the place of salvation. Here Shakti and Shiva i.e. Brahma in the form of time, Sadashiv and Durga reside here as husband and wife. It was here that the mother of the world gave birth to Shankar. Shiva and Shiva had never freed this picturesque place Kashipuri from his presence even during the time of doomsday.
According to another Purana, once the sages became curious as to who was the father of Lord Shankar? He asked this question to Shankarji, O Mahadev, you are the creator of everyone, but who is your creator? what are your parents names?
Answering this question, Lord Shiva said – O Munivar, my creator is Lord Brahma. Lord Brahma, the creator of this universe, has given birth to me. After this the sages once again asked Lord Shankar that if he is your father then who is your grandfather? Then Shiva replied that Lord Shri Hari i.e. Lord Vishnu, who maintains this creation, is my grandfather.
The sages, unaware of this act of God, again asked another question that when your father is Brahma, grandfather is Vishnu, then who is your great grandfather, then Shiva smilingly replied that Lord Shiva himself.
