How the owl became the vehicle of Goddess Lakshmi, a mythological story

Share

Owls are becoming extinct. According to Western mythology, fooling someone is considered a fool. This means fooling someone, but this belief is incorrect. Owls are the most intelligent nocturnal creatures. They have the ability to foresee the past and future.

The owl is considered a symbol of good luck and wealth in Indian culture. However, most people fear it. This fear also leads to it being considered inauspicious. It is often believed that it serves the occult. Many strange beliefs are prevalent about owls in India and abroad.

In order to become more prosperous, people are doing tantric rituals using nails, feathers etc. of rare species of owls. Some people even sacrifice it on Diwali night, which has deepened the bird’s distress. However, this practice also takes away any remaining wealth and leaves the person in even deeper trouble.

Owl: It is awake when the world is asleep. It can rotate its neck 170 degrees. It makes no wingbeats while flying at night, and its eyes never blink. The owl’s “hoo hoo hoo” is a mantra.

Owls have five key qualities: their sharp eyesight. Their second quality is their silent flight. Their third quality is their ability to fly even in winter. Their fourth quality is their exceptional hearing. Their fifth quality is their ability to fly very slowly. So, owls have unique abilities that no other bird possesses. Observing this ability, scientists are now working to develop similar aircraft.

Owls are a bird that can be beneficial for farmers. Their presence prevents rats, snakes, and scorpions from entering the fields. Additionally, owls are a predator of small insects. Around sixty species or subspecies of owls are found in India.

How did the owl become Lakshmi’s vehicle?

After creating the animal world, one day all the gods and goddesses came to roam on earth. When the animals and birds saw him roaming on the earth, they did not like it and they all gathered and went to him and said that we are blessed to be born by you. We will take you wherever you want on Earth. Please choose us as your vehicle and bless us.

The gods and goddesses agreed and began choosing them as their vehicles. When it was Lakshmi’s turn, she was confused about which animal or bird to choose as her vehicle. Meanwhile, a competition broke out among the animals and birds to become Lakshmi’s vehicle. While Lakshmi was pondering this, a fight broke out between the animals and birds.

Lakshmiji silenced them and said, “Every year on the new moon day of Kartik, I come to visit the earth. On that day, I will choose one of you as my vehicle.” On the day of Kartik Amavasya, all the animals and birds started waiting for Goddess Lakshmi with their eyes wide open. As soon as Lakshmiji arrived on earth at night, the owl saw her with his sharp eyes in the darkness and reached near her at a fast speed and started praying to her to accept him as her vehicle.

Lakshmi looked around and found no animal or bird. So, she accepted the owl as her vehicle. Since then, she has been called Uluka Vahini.
